You must be talking about the first wave of the rich in Russia. The look you describe is quite passe these days. It's called "the delight of the villagers". Although in general, we Russians are much more decorative and appearance-oriented than Western women, the currently favored look among the rich is that of effortless beauty: little makeup, amazing bodies, long hair, athleisure, beautiful skin. I must also correct you on the subject of Russian men. The marriage market in Russia is exactly the same as everywhere else: there are enough men for all the women but only a small segment of men are super-desirable to most women. Therefore, what they mean by "shortage of men" is really the "shortage of super-desirable men". On drinking, WHO places Russia in total (unrecorded+recorded) alcohol consumption as #19 in the world - that is, behind Germany, Nigeria, Ireland, France, Portugal and a few others. The secret to the "Russian skinny" look, likewise, is the same as everywhere - small portions and movement. Culturally, portion sizes there are much smaller than in the US, and body size follows. |
Not really. Rich women tend to be more controlling, disciplined and type A. Meal delivery and such doesn’t matter. Even if the frig is empty, no way they are rolling through Mcds. They would eat a can of tuna before it came to that |
Exactly. Moreover, no one even needs all of that to be skinny. You just eat at maintenance or below, that's all. |
Tuna is delicious! (but not when spiced and lightly fried) ![]() |
This is what I see. And these women are active themselves outdoors playing tennis, running, hiking, etc. Their kids are also active so they are constantly shuttling them here and there to sports. Being active and fit is the goal, neither the man nor woman is out of shape. When I see these parents at kid birthday parties they will never take the piece of pizza or cake. Their indulgence seems to be a glass of wine after a long day and hard workout. They are fit, active, eat well, and want to look a certain way, not so much skinny but athletic and toned. |
Waned to add: when they vacation they snow ski in the winter and water ski and bike in the summer. They are active year round, they don't spend weekends on the couch. |
|
Or loafing and gorging themselves on cruise ships |
This made me laugh because my family just came back from a ski trip. DH and I both work, me from home. We both do OTF, have (and use) our Peloton, and go on walks/hikes in the local parks around our neighborhood (Arlington). I definitely don't eat the birthday cake, and probably wouldn't eat the pizza. I do drink (all of the) wine. I'm a sz 29 jean/8 dress - 5'6" and 165. Not sure I'm the "skinny" mom, but I can probably squat with her on my back. |
It's an expensive lifestyle, which is why staying fit and active is so hard for many. But, you probably look fit and at a healthy weight which is what the women I know aspire to. They want to look decent in their bathing suits for their next exotic vacation. |
My husband and I squat, bench, peloton, Solidcore, bootcamp, run, etc.
We have boys. Our vacations always involve biking/hiking/kayaks, etc. Kids are very athletic like we were as kids. Unlike the other lady, I do eat the cake ![]() I’m 51 and still weigh what I did at 25. Size 2-4. Eat generally healthy, but never deprive myself. If I want a cupcake I’ll have it. During the week: oatmeal fruit latte is breakfast; lunch is very minimal - yogurt ; early dinner before sports Practices for kids—protein, vegetables , or a pasta. Weekends I can eat like a man at restaurant dinner. I have a sweet tooth occasionally and I’ll eat the chocolate or the cookie. I limit wine to 1-2 days per week max now. |
The same motivation that gets people rich is simply employed to keep them thin, too.
It takes consistent discipline over time and some self control. Success in business is not much different than success in health. |
Women of a different era wanted to be skinny for skinny sake. They smoked to kill their appetite, counted calories, starved themselves, tried fad diets, and watched like a hawk what everyone around them ate, especially their daughters. They didn't work out and had no muscle tone. Modern wealthy women are healthier, active, athletic, and eat well, for the most part, but nobody is perfect. |
+1 I saw this lady get out of her X7 in a tennis get up at about 2 PM. Which is fine, spend your day how you want - but how much is enough? I was on my lunch break. As she emerged from the car next to mine, not just her clavicle, but her entire sternum protruded and seemed to emerge from her car before she did. Scary stuff. Two days later, I don't know if she made it, she could only last a day without sustenance - God forbid. I'm not exaggerating, sadly. Obvious body dysmorphia. I wonder at what point women don't see what is really happening to their bodies (this goes for extra large people, too) and what it does to their daughters. |
Depends. Anything in excess is obviously a personality deficit and has negative ramifications. Too skinny, too fat, etc. Those bony women don't look any better than those thick necked rugby payers. |
