Shutdown Rhetoric

That and they cannot compromise for a healthy government

The House has acted to fund the Government. It is up to moderate Senate Democrats to join Republicans to keep the Government open. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner need to step up to vote in the interests of their constituents. This will have a real financial impact on them as Government employees and contractors get furloughed.

Recap of how we got here:
1 Trump rescinds DACA, demands Congress act within 6 months
2 Senate forms bipartisan talks on DACA
3 Trump promises to sign whatever group comes up with
4 Group reaches bipartisan deal
5 Trump does 180, rejects deal, leaving DACA kids to be deported

Right...I am puzzled that people don't seem to understand that this is actually what happened. Trump (probably at the urging of Miller) is the one who tanked the deal - the BOTH parties in Congress said they could live with.

The GOP, with 51 members, doesn't have 50 votes.

So, no, this isn't on the democrats in the Senate.

This sounds great...but all the Republicans are not on board. So how are you putting this on the Dems when it is the GOP who cannot get their people in line? You are asking the Dems to save the GOP from themselves.

#SchumerShutdown

Props to Speaker Ryan on that hashtag. Genius.

This is too many steps for Trumpsters to comprehend, but it’s a nice summary for triple digit IQs.

I dunno. I comprehended it, and I'm a Trumpster.

Eff you.

Nope. Time for liberals to feel the impact of their policies. Regular people have been furloughed and laid off for eons, and not only don't they get back pay, they usually lose their jobs entirely. Time for the protected liberal Feds to feel the pain of liberal policies they support.

We'll see how much you care about the Dreamers if it means you lose a week's pay.

Ok I must not be seeing your point of view bc I am a NOT liberal fed. I could care less about the dreamers -- if we can work something out for them, great. If not, well there 300 mil Americans here legally that we could be worrying about instead.

like CHIP?

60 votes are needed to stop the expected Democrat filibuster.

Most Republicans (if not all) will be on board when it comes time to vote. Some of them will preen for the camera first but will be there at the end of the day. I will not vote for Kaine again if he votes against my interests.

All hat, no cattle. You’ve clearly never interacted with an actual intellectual. They don’t need to lie about marathon times.

Why can't CHIP be combined with Medicaid? These redundant programs cost a fortune to administer.

And once we have all the poor all taken care of, where they don't have to pay a cent, can we please give some attention to middle earners who have been priced out of Obamacare insurance as a result? Even if they DO sacrifice to make the payments, the insurance is so awful (for non-poor people) that Many actually saved money pretending NOT to have the insurance and paying cash.

If the Democrats want to hold the budget hostage because they want a DACA deal then shame on them. Deal with DACA separately. Shame an any party that continues to tack different agendas together as a way to fight the other side. The spending bill doesn't, and shouldn't, have anything to do with DACA.

Do you know why DACA is an issue today? Because the GOP was never once willing to put it to the floor for a vote, so no.

Exactly. The GOP as a whole hasn't acted in good faith on this issue at any point along the way. Dems would be fools to believe that if they pass this resolution the GOP will start negotiating sincerely on DACA.

After all, Susan Collins is still waiting on Obamacare stabilization, and the GOP isn't even pretending to keep their word on that one.

There is a viable proposal for dealing with DACA but it needs funding for the wall/enhanced border security, limiting chain migration, and cutting back on the number of new immigrants by limiting to a merit based system without regard to country of origin. If these are part of the legislation the DACA kids can be given right of residence and a pathway to citizenship.

So DACA beneficiaries are just pawns to achieve other ends. Got it.

DACA beneficiaries are getting a break if legislation passes. What is required is to take measures to minimize the likelihood of it happening again.

So punish the DACA beneficiaries for things other people might do in the future.

How very... something... of you.

Bizarre reasoning ........

You know they're human beings, right? Human beings who are innocent victims in this? They're not things, they're not trash, they're actual human beings, just like you, with just as much inherent value as you have.

And the people who are immigrating here legally and in so many cases have been stuck in the legal immigration line for 15 years or more without any idea of whether they'll get a green card in the end are human beings too. Why are you prioritizing those whose families broke the law? Do you extend the same consideration to children of Americans whose parents have committed a crime, however puny, and have to go to jail? This double standard is a cruel joke.

signed,

Legal Immigrant

True that! Signed many-generation American.

Nobody waits that long, unless they are parents or adult children of immigrants. Are you for chain migration now?

Of course they do. I have Indian friends who've been here since 2002 on work visas. Their green card application had to be restarted by a new employer when his company decided to transfer operations abroad. If I remember correctly, the last I checked a couple of months ago, CIS was up to processing 2008 applications, and theirs was refiled in 2011 or something like that. Natives who think legal immigration is a walk in the park don't have a clue.

I am not a native, and I went through the immigrations process. What you are describing is specifically tied to work visas, which are employer-dependent. Not USCIS' fault that the applicants can't keep their job or their employers are screwing over. They should just overstay their visa, see how well that works out for them. You know, like most illegal immigrants. I assume they would be cool picking crops instead of their high paying jobs.
