Enlightening. |
Thanks to the former admissions person. The points you make have been eye-opening to me, at least. I'm not sure everybody will be comfortable with what you've said, but at least they know!
(And do the rest of you really have to "spin" it with finger-wagging historical viewpoints and then the snark re the history? Oh well, this is DCUM, I guess you can't stop yourselves.) |
Ivies were all male back then, but I think minorities were certainly allowed; just not that many applied, and the Ivies weren't recruiting them either |
19:29 ---This is Ivy Admissions again...thanks for the nice comments. The Ivy Admissions people are all very thorough in their work. Of course, the results are going to upset people The admission rate at Harvard and Yale is about 9%; Princeton 10% and then it goes up a little from there. I really still know and believe it is possible for people to get into the Ivies. Places like Cornell have a little more favorable admission rates. Normal kids get in every day...they're the ones who study very, very hard and work unbelievably hard. Yes, kids get left on the sidelines. It's a very tough job reading and re-reading applications...we really tried to be fair to everyone and give everyone a fair read. |
It's quite obvious that members of DCUM require historical context. No one here seems to appreciate there was a time, not long ago, when Blacks and Jews were largely not allowed in the Ivies (undergraduate, medical and other graduate schools). But, then again, this comes as no surprise. Students outside of America perform better in most subjects ... including US history. A real education will require more than grade inflation, SAT prep and rushing off to the boat house. |
19:29 I am so glad you find the remarks from the admission officer so eye opening. I am surprised that one could be so in the dark! Don't worry you'll soon get up to speed in history.
|
be nice...it's refreshing when someone is so honest...why be so mean about it |
Are you sure she is honest? |
We all know the historical context, thank you. Even those who weren't history majors (like I was) cannot have failed to miss it all the other times you sprinkled it through this thread.
So you don't need to teach us history, and especially not over and over and over. I'm guessing that your real issue is actually subtext. Are you defending affirmative action today, based on history? I think most people here would actually agree with you. However, your rudeness and beat-them-over-the-head approach may be driving a few supporters away. Somebody had to say it. |
PP--not everyone is as perfect as you -- did you go to a 7 sister or something? |
An no one here seems to appreciate that there is a time, now, that Asians are largely not allowed into the Ivies. They are not legacies. But there are plenty of good institutions providing exactly the same quality education. Some of them outside America. I still get confused sometimes why people think where you study is more important than what you study. |
PP -- oh please! Save your violin for another time. There are plenty of Asians at the Ivies and all of the top schools in the USA (the percentages are higher than the percentage of Asians in this country!) Check out US News & World Report National College Rankings Online for free and the 388 best colleges book. For the best-ranked public college in the US according to US News -- Berkeley is #1 and has 43% Asians! That's ridiculous. All of the Ivies have at least 9% Asians. |
Agree |
I agree too. Has anyone visited MIT lately? I realize it's not an Ivy, but it's ranked #4 on the current US News & World Report National College Rankings. It seems the only people who go there are Asians! |
Yes, I agree. Is there anyone at MIT who isn't Asian? |
