Now, as a result of Bowser's seven-year-punt, even more overcrowding for Deal and Wilson, when those schools are already at their respective breaking points. This is a terrific opportunity for at LEAST one charter to step in and provide a relief valve for Deal/Wilson-bound parents who don't want to send their kids to gigantic schools. Will be interesting to watch. |
There aren't any Charter hopefuls who can open up a school WOTP.
This will be a game changer. |
I don't know about any restrictions on WOTP -- but regardless, it wouldn't have to be WOTP. Somewhere in a .25 radius around 16th and Columbia would entice many parents slotted for Deal/Wilson, if it meant a smaller school community. A lot of folks have their eyes on what DCI is able to do; but that's not the only school that will see this move by Bowser as an opportunity to recruit a lot of high SES-ers. |
I call BS. How many IB families for Deal are going to choose DCI? |
@21:09: more than you think, if DCI can put together numbers competitive with BASIS and Latin.
Everyone seems to believe Deal will continue to be the gold standard in DCPS, but overcrowding has been a very significant issue there the past few years. It's the main negative parents discuss with respect to Deal, whereas the "jail" part of "yale or jail" has always been a problem for high-SESers vis-vis Wilson, and Bowser's decision will not help that problem, either. |
Won't DCI also have the yale or jail balance? Not sure what changes there. If people just want smaller they would do Hardy. |
Oh boy, you have to watch out for the slum-dwellers of Crestwood and 16th Street Heights. |
+1 |
Not nececellery. It's a special program at DCI, at least by intent. |
Jeff, as much as the Crestwooders like to believe it, your demographic is not the same as west of Connecticut Ave. Nevertheless, the hope was you guys would create enough stink to make one or more Unicorns a reality; but now, the 'wooders are just exacerbating the overcrowding problem. |
well, intent is just that. |
Based on this, I'd have to guess that you either know nothing about Crestwood or you simply have issues with black people because race is the only real demographic difference. |
Oh, boy...Jeff, you should be happy about the Mayor's decision, not a ravin' loon. Truth is, you guys are being coddled when you could have contributed to change. Be content with the political power your (fill in category) privilege brings, rather than slinging a hateful allegation onto your board. |
I'm not the one insulting other neighborhood's demographics. Seriously, what is your basis for thinking that there are significant differences between Crestwood's demographics and the rest of areas within Deal's boundaries? I'm not saying that Crestwood is Beverly Hills, but not everything West of the Park is Spring Valley either. It's just astonishing that your issue with us is that you think we are too poor. |
@2213: Clearly, Jeff, you are defensive about this issue, perhaps justifiably for someone who has a history of sticking up for civil rights, but perhaps you're a bit rattled because you just won a nice political battle fueled by privilege? But here, you went off the rails with the racist allegation. Crestwood used power politics to get what it wanted, and brought 16th Street Heights (a slightly different neighborhood than yours) along with it. You'd rather accuse critics of racism than admit you got yours. Buck up and be fine with a little inconsistency in your world-view, its the way the world works. |
