My kid wasn't top of his class, didn't do extremely well on his SSAT, but did get a 35 on his GRE, didn't have anything the least bit interesting on his application, not a URM, and that got him into Wash U early decision--I think because that school wasn't especially popular among his classmates. In short, find an excellent school that isn't "hot" among your kids' classmates, and apply there early decision.
