Typo-- parents of 8th graders accepted. Yes, it is difficult to be a teen mom and go to TJ! It can be done! |
TJ loves a sob story. So my teen with a baby was accepted. Grandmother will raise the child. |
I think she will do well at TJ with her maturity. |
Sexual or mental maturity? |
they ask for the information but how do they use it? I am seriously asking this as someone who doesn't know anything about this school. if they considered race - wouldn't they have accepted more AA and hispanic (like universities that practice affirmative action)? the very low numbers of AA and hispanic accepted - makes it seem like they are not trying to fill a quota. it would seem like they are just accepting the best qualified. but again - I don't know. I would like to know more about the admissions process - the article in the post today did not address this. |
Well, I did not know there are so many negative people on this forum. |
TJ's new national ranking is #4. Last year it was ranked#2. I am predicting it will fall to #10 in two years because the admission process is broken. Majority of kids accepted by this school this year and in the last two years have scored between 40-42 in math portion of the TJ entrance test. The school is accepting kids with mediocre skills in math and has been rejecting majority of kids who have scored above 48. TJ as a school scored poorly in math section of the national evaluation. The school's administration is lousy and is being headed by someone who is inflexible, passive and uncaring. The school has no mechanism to support kids who are not doing well. If you are rich and can hire tutors, your kids will do fine in this school. Most kids don not want to enroll in Calculus BC and yet this school considers itself a science and technology school. |
A large part of the methodology used for this ranking involves looking at what percentage of economically disadvantaged students attend the school.
TJ has a very low percentage of economically disadvantaged students (as measured by participation in the free and reduced lunch program) which affects the score in the ranking. |
This may be true, but there is hardly any change in the number of students who fall in economically disadvantaged category over the years. It's ranking is going down because it is admitting kids who do not have aptitude for science and math. They had to provide remediation in math to a significant number of freshmen last year. This year test was very easy and yet it admitted more kids who scored low in math and rejected kids with good scores and excellent credentials in science and math. The new ranking is reflecting that and you will see its ranking will falter further in coming years until such time it revamps its admission process and gets rid of its current administrator. |
As a parent of a TJ kid, I'm glad that TJ lost its #1 ranking...this reduces the pressure on the kids to live up to the hype. At the end of the day, it's just another HS that all the kids there are interested in STEM. |
I agree with your perspective. |
TJ has 2% economically disadvantaged. The #1 school has 29% and the #3 school has 26%. (#2 states 0%, but it is possible they did not report this figure, since they also did not report teacher student ratio.)
The first two steps in the methodology dealt with results on state proficiency tests compared to other students in the same state. The third step looked at how many students took AP exams and then how many "passed" with a score of at least 3. There was no separate national evaluation; the magazine just compared results from state tests to other in the same state. These rankings are meant to sell magazines. The rankings will change from year to year to get people to buy a new issue each year. Why buy a new copy if it's the same as last year? |
Numbers can be manipulated and rankings really don't matter that much. Your child will do well wherever they land (high school, college etc.).
I agree with the above poster about the pressure being off the kids. TJ should just not participate in the rankings and concentrate on being the great school we all know it is. |
No need for AA or URMs to apply to TJ -- they have spots in the privates. Nicer and much easier. |
that's nice but it didn't exactly answer the question. |
