Would a Hillsdale graduate have reduced professional opportunities?

So a kid that graduated from Harvard Law School but did their undergrad at Hillsdale would get immediately dismissed as a nutcase by you? lol

The elitism displayed by the leftists on these forums is staggering...and revolting

Avoiding nut jobs isn’t “elitism”.

Agree - which is why I’d never hire a Yale or Yale Law School graduate, not to mention Stanford Law, Oberlin, Reed, etc. Hard pass on all of them.

Jan 6 lol - the default talking point...as if the colleges listed as elite by leftists here haven't seen their share of violence, rioting and mayhem

The question isn't whether there have been campus protests. The question is whether the alumni magazines at "leftist" universities are routinely publishing defenses of attempts to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power in our democracy.

The students and alumni of these schools routinely defend the rioting and violence that their leftist students engage in, so not sure where you’re going with that.

I think that a person seeking a liberal arts education would do better at Hillsdale than at most top universities or LACs. They've retained the sort of curriculum that other colleges have abandoned.

But if you're wondering whether a Hillsdale degree might be taken against you, just read the responses in this thread. A lot of people are really hostile toward Hillsdale. And even if they're wrong, they still do a lot of hiring.

Equating Hillsdale or Liberty to Notre Dame seems uninformed, if not provocative.

Notre Dame is a Top 25 university that has broad recognition as such, along with one of the largest, most engaged, most influential alumni networks in the U.S. and across the globe.

Hillsdale and Liberty are indoctrination centers that happen to have a campus.

Like Oberlin or Bard or Hampshire or Reed, eh?

They may be too liberal for your tastes but academia recognizes Oberlin and Reed as excellent schools. They both regularly show up on lists of PhD feeder schools. The list also contains many other SLACs. What isn’t a surprise is that Hillsdale is never on these lists.

DP. You may want to sit down for this. USNWR National Liberal Arts College rankings:

Hillsdale #50
Oberlin #58
Reed #63

Classic striver comment. USNWR has been a joke since they changed the criteria. Yale and Harvard Law formally withdrew from reporting in 2022. I’m much more interested in where my kid goes to grad school. And Hillsdale will get them nowhere.

Tell us you're ignorant without actually telling us.

Your link proves my point perfectly - it’s utterly unimpressive. Especially since Hillsdale’s top majors include biology, history and English (majors which regularly lead to PhD programs).

Hillsdale didn’t break the top 100 for PhD feeder schools. Schools that made the list of PhD feeders? Reed, Oberlin, Bard, Hampshire and a school called…Tougaloo College. lol.

DP. It’s utterly bizarre that you care so much about which schools produce the most PhDs. Why? That’s not even a factor for most people when choosing a school and it’s certainly not what we’re discussing here. Who cares?

You must be new to the college forum. Parents sending their kids to SLACS care a lot about outcomes and prestige. That’s kind of the point of a SLAC: law school, med school, PhDs. Politics aside, Hillsdale grads aren’t being hired by good companies because their degree is mid.

Hillsdale’s most popular majors are English, history and bio. Are they just graduating a bunch of public school teachers? Because Hillsdale students aren’t going onto higher ed like a normal SLAC. Don’t like the PhD metric?

Let’s do medical school where schools like Wesleyan, Wellesley and Oberlin are all feeders. https://www.collegetransitions.com/dataverse/top-feeders-medical-school/ Hillsdale is not the other end of the political spectrum of the schools listed. It doesn’t create good outcomes outside of their right wing bubble.

Link to students and alumni “defending violence”.

And you assume this from reading comments on an anonymous mommy blog?

I think that it would definitely limit his employment and professional prospects to graduate from this school. Certainly my colleagues from the Bethesda area would trash his resume.

Curious if others agree.

I think it works both ways. I spoke with a CEO of a fortune 500 company who said this school was the BEST school in his opinion - which means he probably doesn't think much of my kids HPY.

Please give an example of what Hillsdale has retained in their curriculum that other colleges have not. Are you actually familiar with college curricula?

DP. I know that because I’ve been a hiring manager or higher for the last 25 years.

Or they could just go to St Johns in Maryland, or Hampton Sydney in Virginia, or Washington and Lee, or Davidson or a host of other smaller liberal arts colleges which are not particularly liberal.

They actually teach the canon instead of woke stuff.

As Scott Pelley has just found out, resistance to the MAGA program is hazardous to one's job prospects in America today.

A Hillsdale degree, by signaling one's unwavering fealty to the Orange Emperor, is therefore an increasingly valuable credential in today's job market.

By contrast, schools like Reed and Oberlin will guarantee a lifetime of unemployment and privation, if not a one way trip to Gitmo.
