It's wild to read people on this thread saying that the first American Pope in the history of a thousands years old church is immaterial, and that Americans who focus on this are being myopic.
The Pope was born in Chicago, attended Villanova, roots for the White Sox, speaks with a Midwestern accent, votes in US elections, has been called the "Latin Yankee" in Rome for the last couple decades, and has called out the US president and veep on Twitter. And I'm supposed to pretend that's all immaterial, that actually he's really Peruvian and probably the Cardinals weren't even aware of any of that when they chose him? Uh, okay. I guess if it had been Tagle you'd be telling me they didn't even know he was Asian. But unless I think all of that is |
It's so heartwarming that across countries, cultures and religions, people can still be united in their hatred of women. |
| I don't know what the cardinals considered in the conclave but it will be jarring for American Catholics to hear the Pope speak in American English. It will have a different effect on them, including all the American and English speaking world leaders who will meet the Pope in years to come. |
Why would it be jarring? Genuine question. - non-Catholic |
Right? Warms the cockles of your heart, it does. |
Because it has never happened before. |
Because it’s so unusual |
The Church has also been worse that JD Vance and Donald Trump over the centuries. It is one of the things I comfort myself with when I get depressed about the state of the country. At least I am not living in medieval Europe where the Church leaders were crazy but also believed to be chosen by God. |
Sorry, I don't find it comforting at all. We should obviously aspire to more tolerance and understanding than the Inquisition. If we're going to compare the modern world with what came before, well then, even Putin seems a well of compassion and benevolence. Don't be ridiculous. |
Who's going to tell her? |

MAGA minds are blown they are so mad lol
This is fantastic |
I'm so lost here. Why are MAGA mad about the new pope? |
DP, but because in the US, the Pope has always been viewed as essentially a foreign dignitary. So it would be like if the German Chancellor or the Japanese PM showed up with a Chicago accent. It personalized the relationship in a surprising way -- he is, to some degree, one of us. This is bizarre. To works leaders outside the US, it may be strange because of the unique position the US is in as a world leader. They are used to a hegemonic relationship with the US in which it always has the upper hand. To interact with an American Pope with an American accent could feel confusing, as their association with the accent will be so strong. For me, it is very wild to hear the Pope speaking with a Midwestern accent, and to have what read as American expressions and mannerisms. |
Well, first of all because they are dumb. But more specifically: Because Trump wanted Cardinal Dolan as Pope and they feel affronted that the cardinals chose an American but not the one Trump told them to pick (look, I said up front that they are dumb). Also, the new Pope has (fairly gently) rebuked the position of Trump and Vance on immigration issues, and Vance on a statement he made about Christianity. MAGA are thin skinned babies, so the idea that the pipe would simply agree with church doctrine and with former Pope Francis's teachings on migrants and humanity is enraging. They expect the Pope to be like Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz, set aside all principles, and fall in line behind Trump. Also, the announcement of the New Pope took attention away from Trump for like 3 hours on a Thursday when Trump was engaging in his weekly few hours of presidenting. Rude! The Cardinals should have waited until later in the day or Friday when Trump was done working and entered his usual 4-5 day golf weekend. Then the Pope wouldn't step on Trump's cable news coverage and also Trump could have tweeted more extensively about the new Pope, this making the new Pope all about Trump. That about sums it up. |
Great post! |
