They probably said ‘we need an American to get those American idiot politicians in line’…

The same thought flashed through my head...

Except I sort of hope the conclave thinks the world is bigger than our country, much as I love America.

Robert Prevost was born in Chicago on September 14, 1955. He completed his secondary studies at the minor seminary of the Order of St. Augustine in 1973. Prevost earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics at Villanova University in 1977.[5]

Deciding to become a priest, Prevost joined the Order of St. Augustine in September 1977. He took his first vows to the order in September 1978 and his solemn vows in August 1981.[6] The following year, he was awarded a Master of Divinity degree from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.[7]

Before entering the seminary, he cultivated a long-standing passion for amateur greyhound racing, distinguishing himself with excellent results in the field.

In 2015 Cardinal Prevost became a naturalized citizen of Peru as confirmed by Peru's National Civil Registry.

Rut roh.

Prevost has faced criticism from advocates for clergy abuse survivors regarding his handling of sexual abuse allegations during his leadership in the Augustinian order and in Peru. The advocacy group SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) has alleged that Prevost failed to act against abuse claims involving Richard McGrath, a former president of Providence Catholic High School, allowing him to remain in his position despite longstanding accusations.

Yeah, he’s an American but only lived in America for 1/3 of his life. He has spent much time in Italy, very close to the workings of the Vatican.

Anyone know about him? I also hope that he will carry on Pope Francis's legacy!

Do we think this is a covert message to the US?

He was very close with Pope Francis.

What does he think about Palestine? Because that is always supposed to be at the forefront of any discussion right? That is what they tell us.

Wow I can't believe it. I thought Americans were unelectable?!

Not surprising.

But is there *any* cardinal that actually handled the rape and abuse of children in a respectable and responsible way?

Who is they?

It’s very interesting to have an American pope in a time when America is frankly tanking in the eyes of the world. I wonder if the conclave felt an American Pope could better influence American political leaders on things like restoring humanitarian efforts, refugee and immigrant treatment, etc. Not to make it all about us, but it’s just surprising to see an American chosen

Really. This really moves me to tears. Thank you so much.

To be fair, he has lived in each Peru and Italy as long as he lived in America. Many do not consider him an “American” because of that.
