Who are you voting for in the Dem primary for mayor?

It is very much of an NYC thing. Spent a week in Miami and didn't see any shelves locked up.

Of course, it is due to theft. Corporations want to maximize their products. Locked shelves re-direct customers to Amazon, not to Target/CVS/Walgreens websites.

Having said that, I feel Mamdani is reasonably smart (97th percentile SAT results) so I am hoping he will learn on the job. I was also fascinated by socialism (although I was in my 20s, not 30s). I am now much closer to the right when it comes to questions of economy, crime and size of government. Having a family and a full-time job changes people.

This is DCUM - you know, a DC based forum. Drug stores lock stuff here.

Mamdani isn’t smart. He couldn’t get into a lower Ivy as an URM and with a father on the faculty.

Now do Adams and Cuomo.

Now do Adams and Cuomo.

They didn’t strive to max out their matriculation. They came from much more blue collar backgrounds. Mario Cuomo wasn’t governor at the time. Laughable to think Adams could give two seconds of thought to a SLAC in Maine or Columbia.

The biggest issue I have with Zohran is how performative and calculating it all is. Rich trust fund kid moves from manhattan to western queens for the voting base and uses his theater skills to land an easy job as a politician.

Mamdani is "top 3% smart", not "top 1% smart" (based on his SAT score and other academic achievements). He couldn't get into a lower Ivy but he did get into a college with 8% admission rate. Definitely not bad and meets a common person's definition of "pretty smart".

I was at an event with MC/UMC professionals yesterday. They all want to vote for him…

True, probably easier to win in Queens than in Manhattan whose political scene is dog-eat-dog. Agree that he is very telegenic and knows how to smile for the camera. How does that qualify him to be Mayor? Maybe he'll make some great tourism videos to lure the tourists and their money back!

Being telegenic and little more seems to be the qualification for most of Trumps cabinet. At least this guy has some ideas

Other candidates also had good ideas. Zellnor Myrie had a solid legislative record and very sensible proposals on affordability / increasing housing supply. Mamdani easily surpassed him in polls, largely due to his charisma.

Being telegenic and articulate helps on both sides of political spectrum.

Comparing someone favorably to the bottom of the barrel who fill Trump's Cabinet is not a ringing endorsement.

Bad ideas are worse than no ideas. Genuinely can’t wait to see poor people’s rent controlled housing decline in quality and standards with a rent freeze. They deserve it.

By not implementing a rent freeze and not pulling cops away from domestic violence victims. That alone is better than anything mamdani would do.

I don’t think you know what that expression means. But I’ll ask again, what are the ideas that Cuomo has that you like?

Mamdani said he intends to keep police force at the same rate, and that he’d work with Tisch.

Do you know anything about DV? Cops are not who I want to deal with for domestic violence issues.
