Every school is different, he was so happy to get off the WL.

This. Ppl should be thrilled to get off the waitlist. Otherwise, if there is no genuine intention of attending the school, remove ur name and allow another student the opportunity.

WL is fine but deferring students who applied in EA and asking them to shift to ED2 is not good. They can remove EA and RD for all I care and have an endless cycle of EDs. Just be transparent about it so that students clearly know what to expect.

Since all of this is very well documented, I think it is fair to assume that students (and more importantly- their parents) clearly know what to expect. There are countless pages bashing UChicago on this very topic on this forum alone. If you believe that they only admit in ED rounds -- why bother applying EA/RD? Get your facts straight and make a decision that makes sense for you and your child. Nobody has been banned from google.

We are just trying to educate more students. Why are you getting upset if we are just repeating well documented things? Google can handle additional data.

ED1 rejection from Chicago. Private school, 1560 SAT. Super high GPA. Excellent essays.

DC didn’t apply for college, but attended one of UChicago’s fully funded (not pay-to-play) high school enrichment programs which had an 11% acceptance rate. Multiple ED0 applicants (and admits) from DC’s cohort because UChicago truly was their first choice college. At least one dorm mate received a full ride to boot.

I'll say this til the cows come home - many mistakenly regard UChicago as a backup... dare I even say... a safety... for their kids who they think have a decent shot at HYPSM+Ivy.
So when their kids ED or EDII and get rejected, then SUUUUUURRREEEELLLLY that rejection was because of misleading/shady/deceptive practices by the school. It stings harder than a rejection from HYPSM. How dare you UChicago reject my kid when you are a mere tier or two or three below what my kid really deserves?!

TL;DR- It's when you think you're punching down and then get denied. It's entitlement.

I visited U. Chicago with current junior DC last spring and we loved it - it was beautiful, students seemed happy, etc. But we don't know Chicago that well. Then, we learned about these news stories about crime in the area:

https://wgntv.com/news/chicagocrime/3-university-of-chicago-students-robbed-at-gunpoint-near-campus-in-hyde-park/

https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/university-of-chicago-student-fights-off-armed-robber/3414685/

Does this not scare you as a parent? I don't think my kid is as tough of the girl who fought off the armed robber, but I'm sure that I would not have done that myself and my kid has lived in a leafy suburb her whole life.

I'm genuinely wondering whether I'm the only parent who has real concerns about allowing their child to attend UChicago.

I do. But when your child who is a young adult has told you that they have thought about their decision, understand the risks and have decided that it is the place where they will thrive, you respect that autonomy they have over themselves.

We are not less concerned about our kids just because we send them there so wonder no more.

DP. I don’t even have a connection to U Chicago but it’s extremely weird to try to imply it isn’t a very good school. Hopefully it isn’t keeping you up at night.

That was my post. I’ll sleep just fine, doesn’t affect me. My kid doesn’t attend, didn’t apply as was only willing to do regular decision. Anyone claiming UofC is not a great school is crazy, pure and simple. It is one of the top schools in country, yield games and all.

Boosters? This thread and larger forum is filled with Bashers giving half truths at best. Just reading the original question from OP (and they actually were getting productive responses) and then seeing how this thread has taken on a life of it’s own it’s very clear it’s a Bashers’ Forum.

If you look at the posts, I think everyone said that it’s a good school. The only consistent complaint anyone had was with their admission practices.

Maybe I misinterpreted, but took whatever makes you sleep well at night after my post as saying it wasn’t all that.

I can’t stand to look at another thread full of BS on my kid’s school, but I’m posting to say that my kid is having a fantastic experience, and almost nothing I’ve seen here in the many, many threads on UChicago accurately represents what the school is actually like. (The exception: the neighborhoods surrounding Hyde Park are rough, and most kids avoid them. And no, my kid doesn’t feel less safe in Hyde Park than near say, Logan Circle, U St., or H St. here. If your kid isn’t comfortable in those neighborhoods, then he or she can apply elsewhere!)

Here’s what she has experienced: Fantastic and small core classes with tons of required reading and writing. (My kid loves it! If yours doesn’t, there are many other schools!) Engaging professors. Insanely smart and motivated classmates. Excellent academic advising and career advising. Nice dorms and dining halls. Beautiful campus. Lovely libraries. Very challenging academic standards. Cold weather.

I don’t care what type of admissions her classmates used. I don’t care how many pieces of mail you all have received. (Or why so many complainers are checking their kid’s email, which is so bizarre.) And I frankly don’t care what percentage of whatever form of applicants got in, and I think it’s bizarre that so many people (or a few obsessives?) do.

Hope your kids who might like the vibe at UChicago visit and/or apply.
