Senior parents - how many applications this cycle?

Anonymous
Kid applied 5. 1 EA (accepted). The rest RD.

4 safeties
5 targets
6 reaches
12 super reaches

So you applied to 18 reaches? Why?

Not the PP, but I get it. They are all lottery tickets. And to all these people who say, why couldn't you do your research and figure out which one you like better... You all are so contradictory. Isn't the point usually that all the colleges are appealing and great and you make your own experience? What if PP's kid works best surrounded by very driven people. There are plenty of schools like that and they are all reaches. Why not increase the likelihood of admission?

DP. I don't think you actually increase the likelihood at a certain point unless kid has a lot of time and focus. If there are so many apps, the kid may not be doing an effective job answering supplementary prompts. AOs don't want recycled essays, and even at top schools, they don't want a student who they think will choose elsewhere. It's much harder to convince them that you want to go there if you have so many to tend to.

The only way to do this well is for a grown adult to manage, massage and hone the application

Offer guidance and feedback, maybe, but the more (I'm guessing writing or as some like to say "heavy editing" which is writing and/or fabrication) is just dishonest, so that would not really be "doing it."

My DC didn't want our involvement beyond our thoughts on their possible essay topics and insisted on doing all the writing. Counselor said AOs are very good a discerning essays written by students vs parents/counselors.

ED 1- rejected
EA 7- 1 accept (over my dead body); 1 reject; 5 deferred
RD - 11 waiting

Stressed is an understatement.

I’m
Sorry. 19 is absolutely ridiculous. No wonder we’re in this predicament where schools ranked 50-100 (and I’m not bashing them - almost all my DD’s apps were in this range) have 20% acceptance rates. Nobody needs to apply to this many schools. Nobody.

They don’t have any acceptances they would actually consider so not sure it was ridiculous

We are in very similar situations…Two ED & 1 EA rejections, 3 EA deferrals, 2 EA acceptances, 1 EA waitlist…waiting on 11 RD decisions including the deferrals. One EA acceptance is possibility but far from top choice-hoping for good news in RD!

But isn't that the point of this thread? They clearly didn't make a good list or their DC wouldn't have applied to a school the family won't accept. Why did they apply there? The PP who stated no one needs to apply to 19 schools is correct. Jr parents please learn from this thread. Do the research to make a good list with your DC that includes likelies they actually want to attend & reasonable targets based on their stats. You can decide how many reach schools to include, but that's easy since you know those are lotteries. Doing 19 quality applications isn't possible and would be pure hell for your DC.

Wow. You sure have strong opinions something that doesn’t affect you.

1. 2 of the EA deferrals were on our college counselor’s “safety” list for DC.

2. I did not approve of applying to the school I won’t let them attend. College counselor pushed it and DC made that choice.

3. It’s crazy…as this forum shows. So we applied to a lot of schools to increase chances. We also know we were dealing with a difficult application (very high scores and mid grades) so some of it does come down to luck.

Why does this bother people so much?
c

Because you think you (I should say “your kid”, but you already said “we applied to…”) deserve a better school. And you made a list that reflects that.
If your kid had mid grades you should have applied to schools that would accept them. Instead you just look desperate.

You seem nice. We (yep I feel that invested in my child) applied to wide range of schools and know that DC will end up in the perfect place for them.

You probably stressed the hell out of your kid. But that’s not as important as a good school so I guess it’s a wash.

Whoa. Lay off. Different families make different choices. That doesn't mean you should be so insulting to them.

FWIW, I'm the parent of a junior who hopes DC won't apply to quite so many schools. But I don't begrudge kids who do.

3 targets
1 safety

Accepted to all 4, 3 with significant (and needed) merit, to date.

Only 'reach' (within DC's desired driving range & program of interest) might've been UVA. Counselors classified it as a 'target' but we disagreed and, regardless...DC had zero, zip, nada interest to attend.

Even now, DC will struggle to chose as they genuinely liked all four. And money can't be a factor because all are within a +/- 10% range of each other when upfront merit is considered (there may be more scholarships or FA later, but the former is way more likely than the latter).

So the angst goes on. The FAFSA debacle just extends an already fret-filled process.

Maybe you should start a thread and ask DCUM to help pick the winner!
update: in a shocking development, DC made a choice and is now all-in! Super excited and can now cruise (for the most part) to graduation.

We finally convinced them, that with all options in-budget, the choice was truly theirs. The top “real” choice never really changed and DC probably could’ve been one-and-done but I wouldn’t recommend that strategy for anyone. Options are always better to have in-hand.

Whew! Good luck to those still in the churn!

DS did 75 total. 25 safety, 31 target, 19 reach. He was the one who wanted to do that many and has had amazing results so far. Only 2 rejections, 1 deferral, and 1 withdrawn so far. Accepted to 52 and waiting to hear back from 19

That is insane. What are his top schools right now?

He was accepted to UMich and U of Toronto (100K scholarship). He's also considering Rutgers Honors. But he's hoping to pull a private school in RD. Our fingers are crossed!

Why did they apply to schools they wouldn't consider? That's exactly why applying to 19 is ridiculous.

Four.

Two Safeties - UGA and South Carolina
One Likely- UVA
One Reach - UNC

All EA and Accepted at all.
