What’s going on at Travilah ES?

I will never understand spending millions on a house and then sending your kids to public school. If you have that level of financial health, that easily pays
for 12 years of private school education for at least two kids. They wouldn’t be here complaining if they had their priorities straight.

We aren't inbounds for Travilah, but we did not consider private. We are public school people to the core.

Before the last few years, Travilah was a darling, sweet school that seemed on par with private.

How much do you think 12 years of private school costs for two kids? And how much do you think a house at Mt. Prospect costs?

Private would be 6 years for an incoming K, fewer years if kids are already there. Frost is still very good, no need to do private for MS and HS. It’s sad that one bad principal could wreck what was previously the best school in the cluster. Travilah used to have outstanding test scores, very engaged teachers, parents and students and was just a happy fun place.

The user experience is still a lot like that. I love that all our friends are within a 10 minute drive and we all have similar levels of financial health- we meet up with friends in Rehoboth, we are in Europe this summer and will cross cross with friends here, it’s a really nice setup. I think the unhappiness is with the staff and teachers.
And I don’t get all the hate for Toll Brothers Mt Prospect- if you don’t like it, don’t live there!!! We don’t, and we love our spacious private lot and our semi rural feeling 10 minutes to Target, 40 minutes to Georgetown, close to everything yet worlds away. Travilah is lovely.

I’m talking about people who actually have a choice.

😂 Sure lady. Everyone always talks about the jet setting parents of Travillah. 🙄 Seriously, you can afford to travel because you are willing to sacrifice your kids education to attend public school. Pay for private school and at least, for your set, that means no European vacations or other extras - for you that might mean no Lifetime gym membership or less Lululemon - who knows.

These are the facts. It's hard to say aloud but those with options should start looking elsewhere

That’s really grotesque. We could easily do either. We are at Travilah because when we joined it was an amazing very small school with a great education and sense of community. Isn’t that why people actually opt for private?? We stayed because the kids were so happy and they still are. When and if that changes we will pivot to private and yes, keep the European vacations, the ski trips out west, winter in a tropical destination, and all the privileges we enjoy. Does the public school system really want to lose all the people like us? I doubt it!! We do extra tutoring, we volunteer, we donate time and money to the school and every cause. We do it because we have had a great experience and it’s one everyone deserves!!! These are your tax dollars at work friends!

Everyone had rave reviews about their ‘W’ elementary schools until the pandemic and then some went private and realized that their “great” little school was far from that in comparison. Having only been at Travillah, you have no point of comparison. So, your opinion has no value in this discussion. To say your elementary was as good as a private school is really silly and shows how uninformed you are. ‘W’ public schools are absolutely nothing like private schools. But I am sure the Outer Banks or whatever little pedestrian vacations you yap on about at the Westleigh pool makes you feel fancy. And, oh, ‘Europe’ is a pretty big place and most people have already been to the places you are just now visiting - it’s cute that you feel the need to mention it as though we should be impressed. You would think you lived in Chevy Chase or something. 🙄

Whether or not the principal is capable of developing an improvement plan, let's focus on finding ways to improve our students' test scores. Parents, if your children are struggling academically, consider getting tutors or providing additional learning exercises at home. You don’t want to be among the 50% of parents whose kids don't meet the benchmark. By working together, we can help our students succeed.

I lost hope of the principal. The principal has no plan to improve test scores and continues to make excuses for teachers leaving. It's worth mentioning that the transfer rate for teachers in MCPS is less than 1%, so very few teachers are leaving for another school in the district. The rate of teacher departures at our school is definitely abnormal.
