Yes, for my kid in a magnet school, her UMish "postponed" letter asked for mid year report to be sent in order to evaluate the student in the context of the larger pool of applicants in RD round. I thought this is standard.

On college confidential people said some received request and some didn’t.

Do not know what to make of that?! Is it better be have the request or not? My kid does not have UW 4.0, so I guess the midyear report will give her an opportunity to show that she is capable academically. Who knows?! But seriously, it is really not healthy to expect high schoolers to maintain 4.0 GPA, particularly if the high school is known to be tough and no grade inflation/retakes.

One of the DC's long-time HS study partners passed on a NESCAC for Cornell. The parents really wanted an Ivy and the NESCAC-like Ivy Dartmouth deferred in ED. The kid ultimately rejected by Dartmouth in RD, but in @ Cornell and a couple of NESCACs. Parents made him take Cornell. Told DC its okay, but thinks a smaller school would've been better.

My son first liked Cornell when we toured last summer, but then decided it was too big and he didn't like the vibe come November.

He did not apply to any large schools. 2k-7k seems to be the range he likes. He's not big into football culture. Complete opposite of me.

Mine did.

Apparently it's the majority view.

Yeah, but you guys are not being honest. Period.

My DD toured both and was so unimpressed with Cornell that she didn't even bother to put in an application. Cornell is ranked 12 and Michigan is 21. In the real world, there's not a whole lot of daylight between those two rankings.

Disappointed but not shocked. His school got 6 in EA last year and this year only 1. Hoping things shake out in the spring.

Your DC's FC?

I have either had kids or close friends with kids graduating HS over the last six or so years and this year seems like a departure from the last three years as HS '21 was a departure from HS '20 and preceding years. Am hearing about "last year Cornell took 5 and the year before 4 but this year 1" or the MI example above with a lot more frequency. It always seems tough when it is your kid's year, but from my POV, looking at it over this span, this feels like another inflection point.

Yes, his first choice. He was clear about that in his app and said he didn't go ED anywhere. We now know 3 kids from his school did get in and none were in the same level of advanced classes as he was. He knows that two had ACT scores of 32 and 33 (he didn't ask, they are good friends). All generally regular students -- no one was a standout or URM or anything. Definitely Cornell was a lot different this year at NYC privates. It's been a rough few days and even though you keep telling the kids it's not you, it's numbers, etc, this stung him.

Was your kid deferred at Cornell or Michigan?

he was deferred at Michigan. I was just referencing the earlier poster who mentioned what is going on with Cornell this year

My kid was asked for grades-- it seemed generic on their website. I think all were asked? He has UW 3.98 4.8 W

Luckily he has straight A's but will likely be rejected anyways (Business) So this whole thing just drags out the rejection.

We toured Cornell it really didn't appeal to DC. DC realized that if it wasn't an Ivy it wouldn't be on the list so DC dropped it and didn't apply. DC went to Michigan. So not quite the same because DC didn't choose between the two, but still easy to see that it might not be a fit for everyone.

I’m starting to think the college confidential people are making this up. Why would they not ask this from everyone?

So far 13,198 views of this thread. Tell me Michigan isn’t popular in the DMV area.

Possible if Michigan instate and Cornell full pay. Most would be the similar cases.
If cost is same, Cornell of course.

Anonymous wrote:I’m from Michigan, 30 years ago we all applied early for in state rolling admissions and if you were in the top third of your class with decent scores you got a fat envelope in the mail within 2 weeks. How things have changed! My DD is applying with significantly higher qualifications than I had and just praying she makes it.

Yeah same. While it is all around harder to get into now, it is still WAY easier to get in if you are in state. I’m in Michigan now and the kids getting in from our local high school have much lower stats than what is being stated here from those accepted.

100% this. I'm from Michigan originally but in NY now - my friends from home just seem to have to get their kids in the third or so of the class but kids here have to be valedictorians with 1500+ SAT scores, etc.

It’s extremely popular and I didn’t know that until my kid began applying to schools. Not on my radar at all. Like most, DC was postponed then rejected. It was hard to see their disappointment but otherwise, I didn’t care. I do not get the obsession. We visited. The law school was pretty and it was otherwise fine but nothing magical. It’s like the Stanley cup: it’s a great thing but the hype and obsession is over the top.

What do folks know about the Honors College in LSA? Are all accepted students invited to apply?

My info is a little dated but when my DC applied anyone COULD apply, but a more select group was invited to apply. DC was invited to apply, and was accepted. This was pre-Covid when EA was still on a December notification date so DC was able to apply for the first round of Honors, which was likely helpful.
