How proud are you to be an American?

Anonymous
Can I answer this question on November 6? I feel like it's not fair to ask it so early on.

The US is big and could hold a much larger population. People come here because it's opportunity. The illegals I have met will make excellent patriotic Republicans in a few years, although they aren't Trumpy.

The major issue is denial and not setting up frameworks to absorb people.

I grew up in an all white Irish Catholic neighborhood of Chicago with my dad being a 3rd generation cop (now one of my brothers is a 4th gen cop and the other is in the military). Being patriotic was drilled into us as kids. Stand for the pledge, remove your hat, sing along with the national anthem, respect the police, support our troops, thank god that you were born in the greatest country on earth. I went to private Catholic elementary school and an all girls private Catholic high school.

I went to Freshman year of college at a state school and LOVED being around different people, cultures, languages, perspectives, etc. So after that school year I decided to backpack the world (much to my parents dismay who have never left this great land). WOW did my life change. I'd be sitting at a table in a hostel with people from all over the world and feel embarrassed that they were communicating in so many different languages and I only knew English. I found myself shying away from announcing I was American (though it was obvious) and noticing how beautiful different cultures were- welcoming, kind, slower paced, less stressed, community oriented, government supported. I went back home for sophomore year and HATED it. Continued to backpack the world for all 4 summers of college.

Now, I'm embarrassed of the neighborhood bubble I grew up in and my family's political views. I was devastated to have no paid maternity leaves. I'm hurt to be raising two daughters here in a place that gives someone like Donald Trump a platform to spew his racist, sexist nonsense. Dh and I have absolutely immersed in our girls in every opportunity we can, we did away with religion, have had them volunteering, traveling, serving all communities, and hopefully priming them to me conscientious, open minded, accepting members of the humanity since they were in diapers. We are seriously contemplating a move out of the country and have been getting our ducks in a row to make it happen.

My answer now: 0% proud to be American.

You should actually be embarrassed that you are a grown woman with children and you are still romanticizing “other” cultures as being perfect and problem free, and somehow fundamentally different in some superior way to your own culture. This is the thinking of high school/college girls. The truth is people are pretty much the same everywhere, and we ALL have our good and bad points.

Yes of course. But when you are in a different country where people don't have the stress of childcare costs, maternity leave, student loans, health care access, etc it is such a stuck reminder that we are not even provided the basic necessities from our government.

Yeah, you’re one of those people who gets off on pulling the ladder up behind you. No empathy and no sympathy on your part. You basically suck.

She probably came here legally. But you won’t acknowledge that.

I’m sure she did. But what ignorant people like you don’t understand is that it is virtually impossible for the overwhelming majority of human beings to immigrate here legally. That forces many people to enter illegally. All of this talk about “get in line and enter legally” is bullshit. There is no line to be had for most people.

It doesn’t “force” them to do anything. Citizens of other countries don’t have a right to be here. There is a reason why we limit immigration. And you’re calling me ignorant?

Yes. You fail to recognize that the pure happenstance of your coming out of your mother’s vagina on American soil doesn’t make you any better than anyone else. There are many, many people who were born elsewhere who would contribute a hell of a lot more to the alleged “greatness” of this country than many of the ignorant and lazy slobs who had the dumb luck of being born here if they were just given a chance.

What the hell does this have to do with illegal immigration? Oh that’s right - nothing. Just some blathering to try and change the subject.

You’re missing the point. You think this country is so damned great, right? Well, guess what? So do a lot of other people from all over the world - but they can’t get in here legally because there’s virtually no legal path for the large majority of human beings to get in here. So, being desperate and thinking of the same things that the rest of us do - peace and prosperity and a good life for their kids - they take desperate measures. The answer isn’t to shut them all out - it’s to figure out a way to actually let more in legally. Immigration is what has and will continue to make this country so damned “great.”

So maybe instead of arguing about what to do about illegal immigration, we should be arguing about legal immigration.

I sincerely believe that most illegal immigrants are good people who only want the chance to work hard, build a better life for themselves and their family, and would contribute immensely to their new communities if given the chance.

I also believe that the people who go find the line, wait years for their turn, and jump through every hoop we demand would similarly benefit America and be good citizens.

The Afghan translators who risked not only their lives, but their families’ lives as well, to help America when asked, I bet they’d be great citizens too.

The American nationals from American Samoa would be great citizens too. They’re already great Americans. I don’t know if they all want citizenship, but we should at least offer it and give them the chance to decide.

The problem is numbers. Unless you believe that we should throw our borders open, “Come one, come all”, we have to set limits and make tough choices. The influx of Syrian refugees nearly sunk the EU a few years back. I bet they’d have been happy to ship all those immigrants to the US. Can we really take everyone desperate for a better life, the vast majority of whom would make excellent citizens and contribute to our country? In a world with famines, war, child soldiers, child brides, honor killings, oppressive governments, corrupt governments, terrorism, genocide, etc., are we ready to be the universal refuge?

Maybe we could set up a continental good neighbor policy and only accept immigrants from North, Central and South America. We could probably handle immigration from Canada but I think our southern neighbors would swamp us with immigrants, not to mention that this policy would seem to be racist.

We need to get serious about how many people we can allow in and who they will be, and then make a process (“line”) to accommodate them. Currently, it seems like our immigration process is effectively to sneak over the boarder, hide from official notice, wait for an amnesty when the numbers of immigrants who are long-term residents reaches a tipping point and coincides with a favorable political mood at the time.

Simultaneously, we need to figure out a way to secure our borders. I think the politicians on both sides would rather have the border as a political issue than to actually close it. I’m no security expert, but there are people who have knowledge about such things (and they’re not politicians). Let’s get some experts - any experts (military engineers, private security forces, UN advisors, university researchers, etc.) to come up with a viable plan rather than a campaign talking point.

Again, I ask: what line? Show me this mysterious line of which you speak. Because there is NONE for the overwhelming majority of human beings under our current immigration system. They can NEVER get in legally. Never. What part of “never” don’t you understand?

No one is “forced” to come here at all, legally or otherwise. What are you even talking about? If you want to go to a movie or a play or a concert but all the seats have been sold, you are not “forced” to sneak in, and yeah, there’s no point waiting in line, either. It’s sold out! Do something else!

Ever notice the overwhelming percentage of people literally risking their lives and life-savings, to sneak over our southern border are Black/brown/POC/ BIPOC/LatinX ?

Meanwhile, democrats in the mainstream press are constantly trying to trick you into believing the US is the most racist country ever, and pushing the lie that Trump is some sort of “white supremacist?”

Don’t believe the lies.

The truth is: the United States is not a racist country, and trump is not a white supremacist.

Bahahahaha because you are welcoming these brown people into the country with open arms??? GTFOH

Seriously. What an insane comment.

Big cities, buildings, bridges, huge stadiums, roads, schools, botanic gardens, etc, but the health and education systems need immediate repairs. These issues come from years ago, not from the current adm.
When food is poisoned with hidden chemicals and excess sugar, people start having symptoms. Most of doctors treat the smoke (symptoms) without looking at the fire (the cause). Voilà the diseases that keep people from enjoying life and making good decisions.
