James Ray Earl was a democrat. He was a volunteer for the George Wallace campaign.

There is no record of James Earl Ray being a "democrat." Yes, he was a segregationist who supported Wallace, but remember, Wallace split from the Democrats over segregation, and formed the American Independence Party. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Independent_Party

Historically both parties had problems, both had uneven and inconsistent support for civil rights versus inconsistent support for segregation.
But in the 1960s, the Democrats who still supported segregation split off and joined with anti-civil-rights conservatives to fight civil rights and are no longer Democrats. With JFK and after, it was the Democrats, NOT the Republicans, who carried out the legacy of MLK.
