Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
I know several people like this in real life. Not many, but a few who claim various reasons for continuing to be ‘vigilant’. They are convinced that they are doing the ‘responsible’ thing and they are terrified of catching Covid. Clearly there are many people who feel this way, as Virtual Academy is still in demand. |
Some people also just don’t do a good job of assessing and understanding risk. Like my friend who literally just had covid was dumbfounded that I don’t mask in stores. They mask in stores but go out to eat, gym, etc, all unmasked. This stuff really is a trend or fashion, with people in DC, SF, and MoCo still believing in masks. It wouldn’t bother me except for that its still impacting kids. |
It’s called the hygiene hypothesis and has been proven by several medical establishments such as MIT Medical and others to be not true. It does nothing to neither weaken nor boost one’s immune system. |
Why does it concern you that someone else chooses to masks? You don’t care that it’s “impacting kids.” You care about yourself. If you cared that it’s impacting kids, then you would mask. |
DP. It’s the masks that are impacting kids. |
You and the poster who stated that do no care that it’s impacting kids. At all, other wise she/he would mask and presumably so would you. Stop using that as your argument for your own agenda. You simply don’t care. |
Huh? It is tough to follow that post. To clarify, the issue is that kids are often still subject to mask mandates. And younger kids, in particular, are impacted by spending large amounts of their waking hours around kids and adults wearing masks. Especially those struggling to learn language, social, and emotional skills. |
No. The hygiene hypothesis has to do with kids developing allergies. It is well-known that kids need exposure to bacteria and viruses as kids to develop their immune systems. That is exactly how the immune system (and vaccines) work. |
Agreed. How could exposure to bacteria/viruses not boost the immune system? That's how it's trained. Ask the Martians how this works. The research (including MIT Medical) clearly talks about allergies. |
A child is exposed to a virus. The body launches an immune response. The child gets sick with a fever, cough, etc. These are all signs of the body’s immune response. Ideally (and usually), the child can fight off the virus successfully. The next time this child is exposed to the same virus, the child’s immune system ‘remembers’ the virus from the last time and launches an even stronger response. This is the basic idea with vaccines and natural immunity. Obviously it is different for kids who are immunocompromised. But, for the average, healthy child, it is necessary to be exposed to bacteria and viruses as a child to develop a robust immune system |
| PP again - agreeing with the other PP, that exposure to germs is exactly how we ‘train’ our immune systems. |
There are no mask mandates so you have no argument. |
It is well believed as opposed to well known which does not make it true. MIT Medical study and other studies more than just allergies as you only narrow in on. It debunked the belief of the allergy theory that you wrongly believe and other illnesses. Sorry, you are not above medical establishments and if you choose to believe a myth, knock yourself out but don’t state it as factual. |
DP. That’s been a long-standing belief but in reality is false. |
DP, clarifying that this exposure is vital for the development of acquired immunity, which contrasts with innate immunity. Both are important. Acquired immunity is not about the hygiene hypothesis. |
