Just brutally false. One prep company claimed nearly 30% of the class of 2024 on their own, and 100% of those belonged to ONE racial demographic.

Are you suggesting that only Indians do test prep? Seems awfully racist to me.

I'm sure you'll just ignore this, like you have the other 100 times it has been brought up. Most of the kids from that prep company are LCPS students occupying the LCPS designated TJ seats. It's obvious that such is the case, because over half of those kids also were accepted to AET or AOS. They also didn't indicate whether all of the kids were admitted first round, or whether many were admitted into LCPS seats after the originally accepted kids chose to attend AET or AOS instead.

Grossly changing FCPS admissions process in response to South Asians in LCPS all trying to leapfrog each other for the LCPS seats makes no sense, especially since even in the new system, the LCPS seats are almost entirely filled with wealthy South Asians.

Then please tell us a better way to both overcome the Curie problem and overcome the "During the summer of 2020, statistics revealed that the number of Black students admitted to TJ’s incoming class was too small to be reported." problem for the entire region.

Sure. Get rid of the application fee. Get rid of Quant -Q. Use something with plentiful free prep resources, like PSAT 8/9. Keep teacher recommendations. Keep essays that are meaningful. Return to a non-Trivial problem solving essay. Give credit for STEM achievements and math coursework taken, but also give credit for diverse perspectives or hardships overcome by including that in an essay prompt.

I’m okay with an allocation of seats per zoned middle school, but not attending middle school, which penalizes AAP kids. Such a system would still increase URMs, but in a much more meritocratic way.

Teacher recs are a no go. They are unreliable and subjective.

Yes allocating seats based on population seems fair for public schools since statistically there should be just as many talented albeit less prepped kids in all areas.

send black kids to curie?

That’s almost laughable. Not because Black kids are any less intelligent, but everyone knows these test centers like Curie cater to only one racial group and hang up the phone, don’t email back, and/or tell you they are “full” if you try to enroll your kid in their classes.
I didn’t try to enroll my kid in TJ prep, but wanted computer programming lessons…….only ONE group out if a dozen calls gave my kid a chance.
These groups openly discriminate because they don’t want any other racial groups competing against their racial group (usually South Asian). The quote told to me “This is for OUR community. Where is yours? (meaning by race)”
I saw a website for a Center teaching Chemistry Olympiad in Chantilly that on the first page said “Asians are the smartest race!……”
WTF!?

This experience betrays the really ugly underbelly of these communities.

It’s not just that they don’t think Black kids are bright enough to succeed at TJ…

Or even that they are super concerned about “stealing seats”… although that is part of it.

It’s that they genuinely do not want their kids going to school with Black kids.

Asians have been totally shut out of a County that Asians make up 20% for many years now. No member of the school board, no member of the Board of Supervisors, no member of County judges, no House delegates from the County, no representation in the top positions of FCPS, no representation in the leadership positions at TJ, no principals at any County schools, no representation at leadership positions at County police on and on and on.

Why so quiet about these egregious complete and total lack of representation?

Sorry you felt excluded but I am not sure what the real story is here. It seems you are just throwing complaints in the hope that one sticks. When you say everyone knows and you paint an entire community a bad way.......you just lose credibility. why would someone who takes a fee not take students? I used to run a teaching center. as a small business owner, I would happily take students of any background. i am part of a non-profit that provides free scholarships for kids (not for TJ prep) - we are actively looking for diversity. very few takers though. prep classes means sacrificing saturdays and sundays. most people don't want to do that. fact not judgement.

Wait a minute. In 2nd grade, teacher input is heavily considered for AAP. Does FCPS believe that 2nd grade teachers, many early in their careers and thus only having seen 100 or fewer kids, are experts in identifying giftedness, but middle school math teachers, who see 150-200 kids per year, are incapable of identifying outliers? It isn't consistent to have AAP admission be almost entirely teacher rec based, but TJ admission be completely free of teacher input.

Yes, they do believe that, and they are that stupid. People have flat out stated in these discussions that giftedness is equally distributed among all races and all income levels. That's the belief they're clinging to in supporting the admissions changes. I mean, it's contradicted by every study showing that IQ has a strong hereditary component, that smarter people tend to have jobs that pay more money, and thus tend to be wealthier, and that no other measurable trait is equally distributed across all racial groups. But hey, why let facts get in the way of ideology?

The South Asians are continually demonized on these TJ threads. Has anyone considered that the South Asians living in Fairfax or Loudoun are not even slightly representative of South Asians as a whole? The ones living in the DC area are the highly educated elites who are in the DC area specifically to work STEM jobs. Is it that big of a surprise that many of their children would also have high IQs and be STEM oriented?

There are prep courses for IQ exams too, you know.

If you are a Black person that is a victim of stereotyping then huh can see how offensive this post is.

There are racists and criminals of all races but if you want to generalize based on your prejudiced sampling of data - that’s on you. No black person or a person who had faced prejudice would say what is said in the post above.

If you are a Black person that is a victim of stereotyping then huh can see how offensive this post is.

There are racists and criminals of all races but if you want to generalize based on your prejudiced sampling of data - that’s on you. No black person or a person who had faced prejudice would say what is said in the post above.

Wrong.

Then please tell us a better way to both overcome the Curie problem and overcome the "During the summer of 2020, statistics revealed that the number of Black students admitted to TJ’s incoming class was too small to be reported." problem for the entire region.

send black kids to curie?

WTF!?

Recent TJ alum. The above is 100% true. I played sports (I’m an Indian girl, go figure) and my parents threatened not to let me play games at Lee and Mt. Vernon because they were “too dangerous”. When they relented, I had to call them right before and right after the game to ensure that I was safe - they wouldn’t go to the games themselves.
