Does Council bill just let people keep their kids home and not educate them?

But these folks are literally “just homeschooling”. So why can’t they fill out the dang paperwork so CPS doesn’t knock on their door?

because they either don't want to (for people attending IB) or don't want to lose their charter/OOB spot. That's it. Let's not pretend it's anything else.

And here’s the real issue. Lottery losers being mad that people get to keep their seat. Pathetic.

“Lottery losers”?! You mean kids who could benefit from a better school but can’t get a spot because some mom is keeping her kid home all year?!

It's alarming that a full 30% of them have been referred for more serious investigation. That's an unusually large number. And how will we catch those cases now?

Its not even in this city, it's not even close, and you need to check YOUR privilege. POC are carrying the brunt of this illness and white people should stop trying to talk for them and stop trying to suggest that a family who is keeping their child home in fear is somehow not equipped to make that decision, and need YOU to make the decision for them. That's a terrible thing to do to people who can and are speaking for themselves.

+1 the DCUM echo chamber isn’t real (and frankly is probably filled with folks who don’t even live in the district.

I know it's hard to come to grips with the fact that you created legal child abuse. But you did, Jan. It's real.

Spoken like someone who has no idea what child abuse really is. There’s the real privilege.

Yeah, Jan. I do. That's why this portion of the bill is so foul. Scream all you want.

I don’t need to scream. Elected officials are listening to me. [shrug]

Privileged much?

It's grotesque that you are all gloating about legalizing child abuse.

There are not enough eye rolls on the internet for this but I’ll try.

Explain to me how we will catch cases of educational neglect now.

you literally just got a bill passed that hamstrings CPS. you deserve all the child abuse accusations you get.

Yep. and instead of saying "Oh yeah this bill DID create a loophole for people to not actually educate their kids at all for 3 months, and to just drop off the map. How can we change that?"....you just roll your eyes.

damn y'all are gross.

right? i don't CARE if PPs keep their lottery seats. their kids will be fine. i just want the legislation amended to protect those children who are vulnerable to abuse and neglect.

How does that work now? Cause I'm the teacher from upthread who is seriously concerned about several students and has been told that we have to let the unexcused absences system to kick in through Aspen and there's nothing we can do until then.

What? To whom? They can't get CPS involved if the family says they're keeping the kids out of school bc of COVID.

At LEAST three months. And the kids who are at risk of educational neglect are the ones who never logged into virtual school last year, and who have a ton of unexcused absences this year. Three additional months of neglect is a long time.

And even if it was kids only being neglected for three months, I would care about that too.

Apparently you can’t read. The school can still report to CPS. This just gives them the choice not to. For a very short period of time.

you are reading the wrong paragraph about absences due to quarantine. look at the one above it about excused absences. excused absences are not a basis for triggering reports to cps.

Now on top of everything, schools will have to conduct their own child welfare investigations and be expected to just give deference to the “long standing families.”

Anonymous wrote:This is really scary. I work as a case manager with DC Medicaid. School is extremely protective for thousands of DC kids--it gives them food, daily structure (and time away from the chaos at home) and in some cases keeps them away from actual physical harm.

I have no idea what the council is thinking. This is going to be devastating to many DC kids whose parents don't or can't have their kids' best interest at heart. I know it's hard to imagine this but many parents make daily and long-term decisions that harm their kids. We saw this in the pandemic--tons of kids who were not schooled at all because there was no-one in the home to login them on, there were many parents who sold the school-owned devices, etc. And this was just the educational neglect (there is physical neglect, abuse, etc).

Truly, I doubt the families you are speaking of are paying attention to Council legislation. And I doubt highly they want to deal with their kids any longer than they have to.

No. You’re reading the resolution. Not the actual legislation.
