Ooh thanks for this (hint of) tea. She’s posting it only if people pay to subscribe later tonight and suggests it paints SL in a negative light. We’ll see! |
Hard to imagine what else could come out that paints Sonya in an even worse light... |
I loved how this Chip Creek guy moved into the neighborhood DD lives in and then, when he runs into her, decides she must be stalking him. What a narcissistic moron. |
The story was full of lazy, inaccurate details. Chuntao's scar was on her pelvis? The donor was allowed to contact her without Chuntao giving permission? There was no waiting at all for a donor; Chuntao qualified immediately after, what, losing/damaging her kidney in a car wreck? None of it made sense. Pretty obvious Sonya's only "research" came from Dawn's social media. |
Uncool that this lady (Rafia) is trying to profit off this. Looks really tacky. |
Anyone pay for this? I am dying to know because I went too far down this rabbit hole but I draw the line at paying to read more. |
I had to Google Chip Cheek because I was so confused. That’s someone’s name? He’s an author of a book called Cape Cod and was paid an $800,000 advance for writing it. How pathetic that he and his friends make fun of Dawn who is apparently less successful. |
That effing guy - he also bragged about getting an $800k book advance. THAT guy is punching down and mocking Dawn - the kidney donor. https://bookandfilmglobe.com/creators/writers/publishingpaidme/ |
The article has a link to a tweet with a sample of his writing. It’s so, SO cringily bad I feel embarrassed for him. |
Wow. Everyone comes off looking bad here, but especially those who punched down. Celeste Ng is terrible. |
It was very confusing until I realized that Chip Cheek is a name. A terrible name. But a name. |
+1 My uncle had a heart transplant so somewhat familiar with the organ donation process (although I guess perhaps it is different for kidneys since living donor is an option). And it’s just so, so bad. |
I really think SL read that letter DD sent to her organ recipient and personalized it. She was imagining being the recipient of DD’s kidney and it enraged her because the thought of owing anything to this person she didn’t like, with whom she was professionally competitive, was revolting to her. I think all she saw was the power DD had in giving someone an organ and the thought of DD with power made her really, really mad. She was thinking only of herself and how she, personally, would feel about receiving an organ from DD. I don’t think it ever crossed her mind to attempt to empathize with or view the situation from the actual, IRL organ recipient. Who didn’t know DD and likely didn’t care that donating a kidney offered DD some agency in her own life. He had never taken a writing workshop with DD, he had no context or feelings about her one way or another, he did not receive her letter and think “white savior” (I am certain, not least because he is also white). He was, I’m sure, grateful for her sacrifice. He might have had other complex feelings. He might also, like SL’s character, have resented that feeling of obligation of gratitude. I could see that. He might have wondered what possessed DD to donate to a stranger. I’d be interested to read a story from his point of view, or his imagined point of view, written by a talented author with empathy. SL is just empathizing with herself. Boring as all get out. |
A guy with a $800k book advance debates needing DD’s connections in LA? These people really are the worst. |
These people all come off horribly. |
