| I woke up this morning to find my fridge door open and the temp at 42. USDA website says food that has been above 40 degrees for more than a couple of hours isn't safe to eat. We weren't home all day so now I need to figure out what I can keep. I assume the fruit (clementines and apples) is okay. How about the veggies? To be safe I am going to toss milk, cheese, etc. How about the butter? Would rather be safe than sorry but also hate tossing perfectly good food. TIA. |
| Try cooking as much of your stuff as possible and refrigerate as left oversea, adjust the legs of your fridge so that the door closes automaticly. |
| One more thing to add, check your freezer because they are connected and warm fridge could have.affected the fronzen area. |

Cheese will be totally fine. Yogurt, fine. If those things have mold on them, then you know there is an issue (and certainly for cheese, mold should just be trimmed off.)
Veggies will be fine - if they go soft or mushy, that would be the only issue. Salted butter takes forever to spoil at room temperature. Eggs stay fresh for a long time without refrigeration. |
|
I would be concerned about raw or cooked meat and soft cheese. Butter and eggs should be fine. Veggies you will know by looking at.
You can tell if milk is off by smelling and tasting. |

| At 42 degrees I would not worry too much about any of the stuff. It is still cold, so I would not throw away anything. If I had stock or something like this, I would just re-boil it. If I had raw meat, I would make sure to cook it same / next day anyway (I rarely keep meat in fridge more than a day anyway unless it is defrosting). My main issue would be with any cold cuts, e.g. ham, turkey deli meat, but I still not throw them away, just make sure use quickly or if there is a larger amount, I would freeze and use them sometime in cooking. |
| I would only toss meat/seafood, raw or cooked. |
Actually, I'd also have to add cooked rice to my list. |
