Well first off it wasn't in FL in December, so you're already starting off wrong. The winter showcase and champions cup are two different events held at the same place at the same time - i know that might be a hard concept to grasp but it happens. Just look at the schedule it's clearly posted that there is a U15 Champions Cup and U15 Showcase - different teams, different schedules. Show me where any of those showcase teams played in Florida in March? I'll wait |
Wrong on so so many levels. Champions Cup and the Winter Showcase both take place at the same time in Nov/Dec at the same time/place, but they are two different "events". Champions Cup is highly attended by the scouts, much more so than the Winter Showcase. The results of the winter Champions Cup event feeds into the placement/acceptance into the Champions Cup Finals event in Florida in the Spring. This is for Champions Cup qualified teams only, and is again, a highly attended event by the scouts as it's a large concentration of the best GA talent. There is also another GA Showcase event (Spring Showcase) which is open to every team that wants to register. Some of the Champions Cup team do participate in that event as well, but most do not. |
Arguing about Champion Cup vs non-champions cup events and which one is "better" is asinine. How "good" an event is for college recruiting is determined at the INDIVIDUAL player level (it will be different for every player on the team and club) - if my DD wants to go to Ohio State, or Alabama or Stanford - the "best" tournament is the tournament that those coaches are going to be at - it doesn't matter if it's GA Championship Cup, GA Playoffs, Winter Showcase, Spring Showcase, etc. |

Do you even listen to yourself? You admit it was at the same place, at the same time. That means that teams that are in champions cup have the exact same opportunity to be watched by college coaches at the event in December. The college coaches do not know or care that the player they are watching on field 17 at 2pm is playing in the Champions Cup but the player on that same field at 4pm is in the Showcase. You are correct that the showcase teams did not play in Florida in March. But they did all play at the showcase in April https://girlsacademyleague.com/spring-showcase/. Show me where any of the champions cup teams played in North Carolina in April. I'll wait. You said that champions cup gives a team an advantage for college recruiting because they have more opportunities to play in front of college scouts. That is just wrong. Champions Cup teams have two events (Dec and March). Non-Champions cup also have two events (Dec and April). All of them are equally attended by college scouts. |
I don't think you are aware of what the club is saying / posting... Former FCV parent, but the location depends on your age group. At least for the girls, in a parent / coach meeting in March, we were told the strategy was to have local practices at the U12 and younger age groups, but after that the North (Loudoun) and South (Springfield) teams would "merge" to form the best teams. Practices were to be in a central location, assuming this is Nysmith School in Chantilly (we weren't a fan of these fields, as only 1 side has lights and it is right on top of the road...but it is turf!). We were told that since our age group didn't have a South team, only North, that is why it would begin in the 2014 and younger age groups. But, the merging was only for GA1. GA2 would remain local. This is stated on the TSJFC page: https://thestjamessoccer.com/the-st-james-fc/travel-soccer/ Beginning at U11 our Advanced Competitive Programming will begin and Pre-Academy teams will be created regionally within Loudoun & Fairfax County. Still minimizing travel for our high level programming. At U13 our national level Academy team will be formed from our regional Pre-Academy player pools. These players will play at a centralized location located on the Loudoun/ Fairfax boarder. At U13 the regional Pre-Academy teams will become Academy 2 teams and continue is a similar training format as the full Academy and they will continue to train in their regional locations. Local travel teams will continue to train and play at their specific sites which will continue through U19. At the time of the statement, the Chantilly fields in the 2023 pdf had already fallen through. We were told that Fairfax would build, and FCV would maintain. Then we didn't hear anything. At AB's intro Zoom meeting in January, we were told that a plan was underway with a school along route 7 where fields would be built on the school property. We assumed Va Academy. Then we didn't hear anything. At the same parent/ coach meeting in March, we were told we would probably get the two new One Loudoun fields (by Silver Diner) allocated by the county. TBD So, based on the field options, guessing the Centralized Location is Nysmith. |
| FCV sounds like a solid soccer setup |

It will be interesting to see the actual attendance lists from this year, and 1 year from now what they look like in the GA. A lot of rumbling that a lot of schools will not be attending the GA or in a very reduced capacity. I may be wrong, but this is what I have heard multiple times from coaches. Only time will tell who actually does or does not attend, this will be a big year not just for clubs but for the GA to figure out its identity/place in the landscape with all the clubs who left and the ones who were added. |
This year, the college that my DD wants to go to only went to the March Champions Cup event and didn't go to the April Showcase in NC - so for her, she wants to be in Champions Cup. You're not going to change my mind that there is no value to CC because of that fact alone. |
Agreed. If you have a DD who has ambitions of playing high or mid level D1 then Champions Cup is your BEST chance (not only, but by far the best) shot playing in the GA. If you lose that you lose a significant chance. If your aim / level is lower D1 or lower then all of this is irrelevant as GA, ECNL or ECRL will give you those chances to be seen. |
If you don't think the level of teams playing (and hence the players) greatly impacts the number (and level) of college coaches watching games, then we can't help you. |
NEFC and City SC come to mind. Hope you didn't wait too long. |
What does the number or level of colleges at any event matter to me as a parent if my DD doesn't want to go to any of those schools? If my DD wants to the University of Whatever and they're going to be at the less prestigious Tournament B then i want our team to go to Tournament B and I don't care that there is going to be over 300 college coaches at Tournament A |
Their B teams, same as multiple other clubs. The level was low in NC compared to years past for GA. |
You are 100% correct. I would venture a guess that most, however, would shoot for the larger number/high quality schools route versus the individually targeted school option. But yes, if your specific kid only wants X school and they are at Showcase B, then that's more appropriate for you for sure. Though if your kid is targeting one particular school, unless you have some hook there, I think you'll be disaapointed in the outcome of that plan. |
