Sidwell holds all of their student to a very high standard, Intellectually and personally. They do their best not to make exceptions for anyone. It is part of the quaker thing of not singling anyone out for praise. This can be a tough on the confidence.

Other schools focus on celebrating individual differences and giving the kids greater autonomy.

Perhaps parents of AA boys find the later approach more in keeping with their personal values.

There are at least three separate threads on the "unspoken-issue at sidwell with African American boys". This suggests it is not unspoken.

On each thread, parents of kids at Sidwell, parents of AA kids at Sidwell, and parents with friends' kids at Sidwell suggest that there is no real problem. This suggests it is not really an issue.

Does that help?

3 threads on an unspoken nonissue?

It is a problem and sidwell knows it. I think the parents of Sidwell kids are being admirably quiet. Frankly, the implications are somewhat racist and I applaud them for not entering the fray.

There is an issue if it keeps coming up.

This is a little hard to swallow - "it's their problem, not ours." Seems awfully convenient, sorry.

19:03 Not sure what you mean. Are you saying sidwell is condescending (or I am) or that there is parental excuse making?

I really would like to understand your comment.

Exactly. Just like Obama and Kenya. If there weren't some truth to the rumors of him being a Kenyan Communist, then people wouldn't keep saying it, right?

That's exactly the point. Whisper campaigns are never too specific.
