If you went to high school between, say, 1985-1991, what was your music?

I.e., pre-grunge.

Me:

The Cure
REM
Siouxsie and the Banshees
The Smiths
10,000 Maniacs
New Model Army
Echo and the Bunnymen
INXS
U2
Sisters of Mercy

etc.

Never did understand why this music was labeled "alternative."

Yes on all those, but also some slightly harder stuff like X, Black Flag, early Replacements, Bad Brains, Husker Du, etc.

Metal, hair bands and hard rock. Wouldn't have been caught dead listening to that crap, with the exception of U2. To this day, The Cure is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

Many of those plus The Smithereens, Talking Heads, Warren Zevon

My older sister graduated in 1991 and I graduated in 1993. We were comparing iPods a few years ago and realized that she had a lot more heavy metal "hair band" music and I had a lot more early grunge because that was what was popular when we were in high school. Our tastes are generally very similar so we found it funny that the two year age difference made such a big difference in our cultural references.

Madonna
The Bangles
