You're right that the projection has Westfield at 2083, not 2150. That's still higher than nine other high schools based on all the boundary adjustments adopted and proposed: Herndon, Marshall, South County, Falls Church, Annandale, South Lakes, Mount Vernon, Skyview, and Lewis.

Interesting that this list of smallest schools also includes all the academic have-not schools people are desperate to avoid in FCPS and that FCPS ignores and refuses to improve. They are deliberately moving Westfield from a regular middle of the pack school down to the bottom tier of Avoid at All Cost schools.

If the only thing keeping Westfield in the middle of the pack was all those kids north of 50, then this was inevitable.

There is nothing special about those particular 1000+ kids. Moving back in a similar mix of 500-600 kids would keep Westfield afloat. FCPS is refusing to do that.

Wait til they cave to the Cub Run criers and moves them back to Chantilly at the last minute. That's how this process has been going down. Every time they put a map out, whatever middle class area got moved to Westfield tantrums and gets themselves moved back (except for the low income neighborhoods who are just being used as pawns at this point.)

Not sure what your point is? Moving over a thousand kids out of any school with balanced demographics but only moving back in 200 or so mostly low income kids destabilizes any school community. Those areas have been zoned to Westfield for at least 25 years.

Yes. I did a search of this forum and found nothing from that post.

I live with someone who works at Westfield and is in the know. Westfield is terrified about the staff they will lose over the next couple of years. The young staff that will not be retained wear many hats in that building.

This is more than a year away. Teachers retire and move every year in a high school. This will not be a wholesale shift in staff. There will be natural attrition and a few always shift to other schools. Some move away.

They are already destaffing some teachers for this fall, that's two months away.

Since you are familiar with it, please name the departments.

They have 200+ kids disappearing from their freshman class.

Why do you doubt they are destaffing teachers who teach 9th grade courses? The principal gets a staffing budget based on enrollment. They can't keep the same number of teachers with 200 fewer freshmen. Maybe you don't understand how schools are run.

I understand enough to know that teachers leave every year due to moves, retirements, and transfers of choice. With a staff the size of Westfield, it should not be an issue. So, be specific please. Sure there will be fewer teachers, but, doubt many are being forced out. Do you think there won't be enough teachers? Not sure you understand how staffing works.

There will be enough teachers at Westfield but there will be fewer sections of some classes, because there are fewer students to enroll. Electives that were on the margin with the number of kids to take them might not have enough kids because some of the kids who would have enrolled are not at Westfield. 200 students is significant and will impact the staffing numbers.

People might be excited to be moving to Skyview from SLHS and Westfield, maybe even Chantilly, but there will be impacts at the schools because the numbers enrolling in classes will drop. It is leading to destaffing and I can understand why people are unhappy with that.

Once fully enrolled though Skyview will have less students than Westfield or about the same. Wouldn’t that mind both schools would have the same amount of teachers and similar academic offerings?

There are always shifts in staff. If you really worked at a school you would know that.

You can’t be serious if you’re comparing normal staff attrition and transfers to what happens when you deliberately start shrinking a high school by 600 kids (and that number will be higher if some of the Chantilly families get their way and aren’t reassigned).

This is anything but business as usual, but you’re clearly so indifferent to what happens to Westfield that you’re pretending otherwise.

The only person who would be so deliberately obtuse is someone living in an area that is at risk of getting moved to Westfield to fill seats and is desperately arguing that everything there will be just fine with only 1800 students, and the loss of teachers and students is completely normal!

Nope. Depends on the demographics of each school as to what classes will be offered. We already know FCPS is planning on special additional academic courses for Skyview that won't be offered at Westfield.

They are going to be pouring resources into Skyview for the next decade or so to ensure that it is successful. I don't think what is offered will be similar at all.

It wouldn't have been AS bad a look for her if she just got the whole BRES split feeder exempted from being moved. But taking advantage of the situation to draw a circle around some apartments full of low income kids (who live closer to CVHS then some other areas that were not moved) and making sure ONLY THOSE kids got moved out of Liberty/Centreville is pretty shocking behavior even from a SB member.

Yes. Absolutely.

I think Seema tried to balance out her blatant favoritism for Centreville HS by creating a split at Brookfield and moving Walney Oaks along with Chantilly Mews. Thats why the last map came out with the brand new split feeder and WO moved over. She didn't realize Reid had made some other random promise at a meeting to some liar from that neighborhood. Then the map was published with WO moved to Westfield as Seema requested and had to be taken down and hastily edited to honor Reid's dictate.That's why all the supporting documents showed WO at Stone/Westfield.
