Trump tariffs: ruin U.S. economy until 2040

Johnson is warning SCOTUS to let Trump have his way. Never has there been such a wimpy Speaker. The Founding Fathers would be astonished.

Johnson, however, waved away the justice’s concerns, arguing that while Congress had a “role to play” in setting tariffs, the Trump administration was “well within the bounds” of its authority. He credited the president with addressing the country’s trade deficit, which he said was “truly a crisis.”

And the House speaker contended Trump had made it clear on the campaign trail that he would seek to impose sweeping tariffs if reelected.

“It’s not some surprise,” Johnson said. “He’s fulfilling the promise that he was elected to fulfill, in a literal sense. I think the court has to give deference to that.”

Johnson also pushed back on the idea that the Trump administration had trampled on congressional authority with its unilateral tariffs. The former constitutional lawyer repeated his oft-cited claim that he was a “jealous guardian” of congressional authority and pointed out that he would have gone to Trump himself if he believed the tariffs violated the Constitution’s separation of powers.

“I would have gone to the president privately and said, ‘hey, sir, enough. I think you’ve overstepped the bounds,’” Johnson said. “But that conversation didn’t happen, because I believe what he’s done is within the balance.”

He further argued it’s wrong to “read too much into” the justices’ questioning at oral arguments. He said the tough examination was part of the Supreme Court’s tradition of judicial review.

“This is how the process works,” he said. “I’m sure the court will look at this very carefully and deliberately, and I expect a majority of the court will say this administration is doing what they have the legal authority to do.”

"“He’s fulfilling the promise that he was elected to fulfill, in a literal sense. I think the court has to give deference to that.”"

Why does the court have to give deference to that? And then he goes on to say that he's a constitutional lawyer. MAGA/Rs have no shame about saying things that make them look idiotic because they know their followers are dumb.

I wish the media would push back on this instead of just accepting the answer and moving to the next question. If a President made an election promise that you could legally kill one minority per year, SCOTUS should give deference to that as well?

A transparent lie told by a President who knows his tariffs are really vulnerable at SCOTUS right now, combined with the GOP's overwhelming unpopularity on affordability. Both of those are worse. We could also add your painful lie that foreign companies are paying the tariffs.

Bessent says it might come in the form of "savings" Trump has already given us. Like no taxes on tips.

What a joke.

There will not be any checks going out. Trump really enjoyed signing and sending out those paltry sums during Covid but the kitty is empty. And even if he did send out more it could not compensate for the billions Trump is stealing.

Agreed. It is BS like 70 pct of what he says. The dotard is nervous because even his handpicked SCOTUS knows the tarrifs were done illegally, and there is a striking likelihood that they will repeal. He is now in a PR campaign hoping it helps.

Interesting paper here that runs the numbers.

It’s not good.

Be interested for a Trump voter to provide detail on how the Trump policy will improve our economy.

“We find that these steps would result in lower US national income, lower employment, and higher inflation than otherwise. In some cases, economic conditions recover over time, but in others the damage continues through 2040.

And despite Trump’s “America first” rhetoric, these policies would harm the US economy more than any other in the world, particularly trade-exposed sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture. In some cases, other countries would enjoy stronger economic growth than otherwise after receiving inflows of capital leaving the United States.”

Shame Bessent and the rest of the “economic policy team” didn’t pay attention to the economists at the outset. He’s sadly mistaken in thinking that this is going to be easy to fix.

Bringing the tariffs down is wise, but Trump broke the trading system. It’s not a lever that he can just switch.

And does this mean the other tariffs will come down when it turns out we don’t have the factories to build stuff?

What a troop of idiots.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Wednesday said the Trump administration will soon announce a broad package of agricultural tariff cuts.
“You’re going to see some substantial announcement over the next couple of days in terms of things we don’t grow here in the United States, coffee being one of them,” Bessent aid in an interview on Fox News. “Bananas, other fruits, things like that. So that will bring the prices down very quickly.”

JPMORGAN: “.. China’s soybean purchases are stalling, potentially putting the trade agreement at-risk, as the 13% tariff on soybeans makes Brazilian / Latin American alternatives more attractive. Further, the elevated purchases made by China in the recent months lowers demand ..”

Whatever "deals" Trump has "negotiated" are not real.

Of course they’re not. Trump is always so excited to sign something with pomp and circumstance that he gives away the farm to get a photo op.

there are no trade deals. Nothing binding was actually signed. 90% of news coverage you saw about “trade deals” was wildly misleading. It’s pretty weird. And it will get weirder as “deals” turn out to be not deals, actually.

It is weird how superficial news coverage has become. The last deeply reported story I can remember was Harvey Weinstein. Hopefully there have been others? Don’t journalists want Pulitzers anymore?

You believe this crap? He also said that he would release the Epstein files and end the war on Ukraine his first day in office. Still waiting while he creates daily distractions…
