The process likely would be as follows: 1. Reid will come up with a final recommendation, and that recommendation could still be different from the "Final Scenario" released a few weeks ago. 2. A school board member will make a motion to adopt Reid's recommendation. 3. Board members can propose amendments to that motion, which would change the boundary adjustments. Any such motion would have to pass by a 7-5 margin if all members are present and voting. 4. There would then be a vote to adopt Reid's recommendation, as amended (or not). That would also have to pass by a 7-5 margin if all members are present and voting. 5. There could also be "follow on" motions that wouldn't directly affect the boundary adjustments but could still be adopted. So, for example, the board could direct Reid to come back in six months with a recommendation as to what transportation options should be offered to students opting in to Skyview in 2026-27 but living outside the final boundaries. Someone like Meren could offer amendments, but they probably wouldn't get adopted. She doesn't have much support from other board members, so it would just be for show. |
They are presenting a transportation proposal at the June 25 meeting. It's on boarddocs. |
Thank you. Re-reading what I wrote, they'd obviously have to nail this down before the 2026-27 school year starts. |
| Looks like opt-out for one year is available to all students. ( Just read the presentation on board docs) |
I live with someone who works at Westfield and is in the know. Westfield is terrified about the staff they will lose over the next couple of years. The young staff that will not be retained wear many hats in that building. |
This is more than a year away. Teachers retire and move every year in a high school. This will not be a wholesale shift in staff. There will be natural attrition and a few always shift to other schools. Some move away. |
| And, when Westfield was built, a large number of teachers moved there from Chantilly--from choice. |
Let's not be naive. The SB will accept Reid's recommendation but Reid can definitely make changes. In fact, FCPS website explicitly says Reid will make the recommendation based on "feedbacks." Will the scenario shared at the June meeting be the superintendent's recommendation to the School Board? The superintendent will present a recommendation to the School Board based on the totality of the feedback received during this boundary study. The School Board will vote on a final recommendation on Thursday, July 16. https://www.fcps.edu/skyview-high-school-and-western-pyramids-boundary-study-frequently-asked-questions |
To be clear, the way how it works is the SB members ask Reid to make their desired changes in her recommendation. That way, the SB don't have to make a motion but can just accpet Reid's recommendation. Unhappay parents will blame Reid but that's why she makes big bucks. |
Well, this sure leaves a lot of room for interpretation. |
To be clear, she’ll make the changes that the majority bloc with whom she’s closely aligned favors. She won’t make changes that Melanie Meren or Ryan McElveen favor. |
To all students, even those not in the Skyview boundary? Ie. If kids get switched to Westfield they can opt out?? |
Not an expert here, but I'm pretty sure it just applies to Skyview. |
many teachers at westfield have been told they are going to skyview and they aren’t happy about it but they don’t have a choice. skyview also doesn’t have money for anything. no money for books in the library. it’s going to be a disaster |
Sure, Jan. |
