The projection has it at only 2083, which is fewer than 2150, with the only MC neighborhood being rezoned lobbying FCPS hard to get out. There's no chance they add more kids in but based on the shenanigans so far, there's a likely chance they move kids back to Chantilly, which would leave them with 1900 or fewer. |
Speculation on my part: There have been Fox Mill posters on here that have indicated opting in. I'm guessing a handful of Oakton kids, too. I also guess there would be Herndon kids since so many choose South Lakes. I am also guessing Floris kids who have been assigned to South Lakes since Skyview is extremely close and offers AP. And, yes, i suspect there are many who would be assigned to Westfield. I don't think people understand what an awful commute it is from Skyview area to Westfield. That, and the disconnect from the rest of the Westfield community is a problem. |
Where did you get this number? |
| Yes, I think the bulk of the Skyview class opt ins is kids who would otherwise be at Westfield this year, with much smaller numbers opting in from the surrounding schools. |
How would changes happen at this point? At the SB meeting, someone on the SB would have to make a motion to edit the map, which would have to win by majority, right? |
Yes. I did a search of this forum and found nothing from that post. |
And, remember, Westfield boundaries do not mean just the Skyview area. |
I think about 1/2 of Fox Mill’s 8th grade class opted in to Skyview. South Lakes PTA was told 47 9th graders. The Floris and Fox Mill contingents at SLHS are pretty small, I think Fox Mill sends about 60 a year, there are JI kids who graduate from Fox Mill that are out of boundary so the actual number of 6th graders is different then the number attending SLHS. I know Oak Hill families who opted in because they know younger kids are going to be there so it was esier for them. I think Floris had a bunch opt in. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the Crossfield families who are closer opted in. I know some kids who attended Hughes opted in but I don’t know from what school. I know some of the Fox Mill JI kids at Westfield opted in to Skyview. I don’t know a ton about the Westfield families so I have not heard a ton about Westfield schools. |
And, a small portion of Oak Hill was formerly assigned to Westfield (Emerald Chase). They had already been lobbying against being split from Oak Hill cohort. So, I am guessing a number from that area may have opted in. I think there would have been more optins from Oak Hill had sports been an easier deal. |
Right, kids who are zoned to Westfield and will be staying at Westfield could be opting in to Skyview b/c its being marketed as a more academic option. |
Yes, I think this is correct. I don't think anyone on the current SB wants to go on the record as being for or against any particular area's desires, so any changes are a really tough sell. They are 1000% more likely to just accept the "final" map as a done deal. I don't think FCPS/Reid will change anything in the recommendations. |
I'm pretty sure Meren will be making amendments. They won't pass. |
Why p!ss some of her constituents off for no reason? |
Because she will tick off other constituents if she doesn't. |
You're right that the projection has Westfield at 2083, not 2150. That's still higher than nine other high schools based on all the boundary adjustments adopted and proposed: Herndon, Marshall, South County, Falls Church, Annandale, South Lakes, Mount Vernon, Skyview, and Lewis. |
