| Do you think it's the case that the majority of college girls in the U.S. engage in risky behaviors like excessive drinking, casual sex, pot-smoking, etc.? Having two daughters, I would like to believe that, although many girls do this, a good percentage of them do not. I, for example, did not. I don't think I drank at all in undergrad (I was an athlete) - maybe a beer here or there, but never more than that; only was intimate with one long-term college boyfriend, starting sophomore year, never smoked pot. Is there anyone else out there who can relate? |
| Yes, I did not do crazy stuff in college. |
| I can relate. |
|
I drank like a fish, but was a virgin until 21. I did not have random sex or hook ups.
Binge drinking was norm at my large state university. Fortunately I always had a huge tolerance so no blackouts or throwing up, etc. I also didn't put myself in crazy situations...like the only girl in a frat house, etc. |
| Are you from an immigrant or minority family or from a lower-middle income background? |

I stayed in four nights a week; went out three. When I stayed in it was at the library for HOURS. Didn't miss classes. Worked hard and got on Dean's List here and there. The nights I did go out I "partied hard" to use the cliched phrase. LOTS of heavy drinking, some pot smoking (more of that in grad school). Many hookups. But somehow I managed to keep it all straight in my head and under control. Went to class hungover and looking like hell. Not in a sorority. My friends and I were all GDIs.
I guess I was fortunate it all worked out. Never assaulted or date raped but I did walk home drunk in a blizzard once to escape a questionable situation... needed to get out of there NOW if you know what I mean. |
No, from none of those. Is there some link between the groups you mentioned, and non-risky behavior? |
Maybe they have way more to lose by screwing up than other groups?? |
| My long-lost roommie! |

Did I binge drink in college? Sure, a couple times. Did I smoke pot? Yeah, a few times. So yes, I engaged in risky behavior. As did pretty much all of my friends. That doesn't mean we were drunk every weekend or sleeping around all over town.
Obviously there are people who did none of these things. There are people who did much more risky stuff than me. There is a ton of research about this topic if you are really interested in it. |
| I drank like a fish and "scammed" quite a bit, but did not lose my virginity until after college. Also only smoked pot a few times, never did any other drugs. |
OP, there's no link. That person was trying to insult you. |
|
I can also relate. I did go out a couple of times a month but did not get wasted and never had a one night stand.
|
Why is that an insult? |

I was not too crazy in college. I definitely drank a lot, but I never blacked out or had to get my stomach pumped, etc.
I had the same boyfriend from 11th grade- junior year in college. I had some random hook ups my senior year but nothing further than 2nd base. I smoked pot once in college. I went out Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and sometimes Sundays. The baseball team at my school always had their parties on Sunday nights and I went to a few of those senior year. I graduated with a 3.8 and had a 4.0 in my major. I didn't go to an Ivy, but one of the better ACC schools in the South. I did some mischievous stuff in high school and college but it was all in good fun. I was with some girlfriends a few weekends ago and we laughed for hours over our stupid antics. I went to a small private school and we threw eggs at the sign of our rival private school, stuck slices of bologna on their star athlete's Suburban, poured soda on the hood of my best friend's father's girlfriend's car (the one he left her Mom for), drove around with super soakers in my Jeep Wrangler, and other silly crap. I survived as did my parents. |
