I'm trying to get my DD off the sugary instant oatmeal, but thus far the versions I've made for her have failed to interest her at all. I would love to hear about recipes you have that your young kiddos are on board with. Thanks1

well it is not oatmeal, it is for pancakes but it includes oatmeal.

1/2 cup oatmeal, 1/2 cup egg whites, 1/2 cup cottage cheese (whatever % you like), cinamon and a little agave syrup, mix it all up and cook like regular pancakes. I also sometimes add some vanilla flavoring or bananna.

taste just like pancakes- serve with fresh fruit or a little syrup

TJS 5 minute steel cut oats. I think it's really 7 minutes. We add something different every time. Combination of: Milk or cream, some kind of sugar - brown, maple syrup, jam whatever, fruit - dried or fresh, nuts. You could add a spice too, cinnamon, nutmeg etc... Usually we pick 3 out of 4 of those. We like the steel cut better than the rolled. Not as mushy.

I use regular rolled oats. While they're cooking, I microwave some of the Costco's "Natures 3 berries" to defrost/warm them. Then I add flax seed & agave & a bit of milk.

Maple syrup & cinnamon & raisins work, too.

Make regular oatmeal with water, stir in no-sugar-added applesauce and a small spoon of honey.

I make mine with rolled oats, milk, & salt, then add cold cream in the bowl. No sugar.

The night before, pour 4 cups of boiling water over 1 cup of steelcut oats (and optional teaspoon of salt) in a two quart corningware dish. Microwave uncovered for ten minutes. Cover and place on a dishtowel in your fridge, or leave on your counter if you're not squeamish. The next day ladle some in a bowl, cover with milk or cream, and reheat in the microwave. Add brown sugar to taste, or a big spoonful of jam (Costco's organic strawberry is good for this).

I just dump some straight cinnamon in when they're almost done cooking. My kids never had the instant sugary kind though. I used to put a little honey in for DS, but I think he forgot about that when we went a long time without eating oatmeal.

I don't eat it (I wish I liked it, but the texture, ugh) but DH swears that the Country Choice Organic oats from Trader Joe's or Amazon are the best--they're toasted. Cooks in about 5 minutes on the stove with my instant hot water from our tap.

I want to try this but it's really 4 cups of water to 1 cup of oats? Just want to make sure. Sounds like a lot of water. And how many people can it serve in the morning?

TIA!

Obviously you can sub in regular milk for soymilk and omit the chia seeds (which I personally love!), but this oatmeal is fabulous! Totally worth trying at least once. The banana adds natual sweetness so a little brown sugar on top of the finished product is all you need The toppings and additions are endless...

NP here. I just tried slow cooker steel cut oatmeal and was also surprised at how much water the recipe called for. I did 2 cups oatmeal (plus 2 Tbs cinnamon) and 7 cups water, then added 1 cup milk in the morning at the last minute.

The oatmeal came out less crunchy than non-slow cooker oatmeal. I also think it stretched farther. DS and I have been eating it for a week now.

Does she like cold cereal? Because I just put rolled oats (not instant) in a bowl with a little salt, 1 T of maple syrup, and whole milk to cover. Let it sit for about 10 minutes so the oats soften. Eat. It's delicious, especially if you don't like the mushy texture of hot oatmeal.

Cook any kind of steel cut oats or rolled oats you like. While they are cooking, put a teaspoon of raspberry or maple syrup in the bottom of your bowl with a teaspoon of brown sugar. Once your oats are done cooking, pour a portion into your bowl. Pour in a little milk to cool. Yum!

I still do instant, but mix 1 packet of flavored with a scant 1/2 cup of plain quick-cooking oatmeal. Add about 3/4 cup of water and cook for 90 seconds in microwave. Stir in some milk.

I do milk with old fashioned oats and then a squirt of maple syrup for my son..for me it is raisins and cinnamon added before cooking.
