Give me an estimate on what a painter might charge to paint a stair rail and banister. I've started into this project and I do not have the patience for it.... I want a replacement! |
Stick with it. It's relatively simple job, just painstakingly slow due to curves, nooks, etc.
Pay someone to do it and you won't be satisfied with the result. |
OP here -- I love Home improvement project b/c I love seeing results... but this is just killing me to spend so much time on so little surface area. Those spindles are torture. I am at least going to get an estimate from a painter...
Anyone paid for this? |
I would guess a painter will quote it by the hour. My guess - $80 per hour figuring it will take about 4 hours, so $320? I truly have no idea though...have you thought about masking off the surrounding area and using spray paint? |
I am thinking about it more and more! If they can do it in 4 hrs., I'm paying them to do it thought!!! For sure. I could be at this for weeks. |

Is there a neighborhood child or teenager who you could pay to do the job? Or one of your own children, or the child of a friend or relative?
It really is a simple job, that doesn't warrant $80 per hour. |
I'd be cautious about the person you hire--if not careful, you'll have paint drips that will be unattractive. |
My husband is a painter and he's never earned $80/hr in his entire life. That's nuts. He would either charge by the hour or give you a project price. You would then pick which you wanted. |
This is a job that has more to it then people are giving credit for. I am a contractor and painting is one of my trades. Properly painting them is a simple job but one that requires some skills to do it right. If it is an interior job I like the Satin Impervo oil paint by Benjamin Moore. It is expensive but worth the cost in the long run. The prep work includes some light sanding or sanding as needed, filling holes with spackle and caulking any large seems. Also wood putty can be used and sanded down if you have any impoerfections that are two large for spackle. Then tape off with Blue tape (comes off easier and saves time) and use drop clothes on all surrounding areas. Prime any bare or repaired wood as needed. You may need two or more coats depending on the area you are going over. Probably 1000 dollar job to do it right. If you are painting an exterior deck I like using a paint with a primer. Two coats may be needed and all of the prep for interior should be used. Latex is fine for exterior. Satin or eggshell will give you a finish that is easier to clean. Probably 600 dollars for an exterior finish. You should be able to find a good painter for 25 dollars an hour or a company for around 35. Good luck! |
exterior railing I meant. Otherwise for a deck surface you would have to use a deck paint to prevent tracking.

How many banisters ? Kinda hard to price it without that |
painter for over 20 years that's all I do. I've read some of the posts, hrly a painter is going to charge $25-35 hrly plus material cost.
as a paint contractor i would want to know whats on there now for the cost of the prep work on any stain areas, that would tell me what type of stain i need solid, penetration or a gel stain. ($5-$8 per lin ft (Stain) as for painting the price is going to be around the same per lin ft, Although if your painting any wood (If you don't want to do it again in a few years) I would prime wood with a oil base paint with 100% acrylic latex on top. PS make sure you use the right type of sand paper on it as the wrong one will block the pours in the wood and the stain won't penetration the wood, I usually use 120 on final sanding. Wipe it down prior to any application of paint or stain Hope this helps, always good to get a estimate from a couple painters, ask as many questions as you can think of this will help you find the painter that knows what hes doing |
I am also a painter and the very first thing i would do is use tsp to clean off all the oils that build up from your hands. I would charge $30 per hour and a 50 spindle railing would cost about $650. which would include cleaning-sanding & wiping down with cheese cloth-priming with a tinted(oil base) primer and then 1 top coat of Benjamin Moore "Impervo" paint. Good Luck with ur project
