Not having a second / vacation home makes me feel poor & depressed. Anyone else?

If I were the richest person in the world I would not own a second home. I just don't care about it. I'd rather travel and see a new place every time I do.

OP where are these second homes? I could’ve bought a home in my hometown as a college student. And I still could. Voila!

It's fascinating to read all the dunces chastising people for owning second homes. How stupid to lock in historic low 2% on a $700k vacation home now worth $1.7mn a few years later. Pissing away your money making the mortgage payments for airbnb and vrbo hosts is far smarter.

Are you still living in 2021? The short term rental market is saturated with the homes of people who bought second homes during Covid and now have to be back in the office. I’ve been watching several resort area markets and houses are sitting, even with price drops. It’s going to be interesting when all the people who bought investment properties on the basis of the rental history during Covid have to start making the payments on the mortgage out of pocket & decide they need to sell.

Because honestly, this week I can't stop feeling "poor" (not literally, relatively) because we don't have a place to escape to. Relying on whimsical invites to friends' and family vacation homes at this point in our life just feels so low and desperate. I don't care how much or how little financial sense it makes, we need a second home. I'm so over being trapped at home all year, fishing for invitations, or even renting for a week at a time. Perhaps this is the precise feeling that motivates so many to buy a second home?

Sorry but you have issues with something else, it’s not money. Having a vacation house does not make you rich or poor.

I have two vacation homes. I'm not rich, just a good investor. We drive crappy cars and live frugally. We rent out the houses when we're not using them. They've paid for themselves.

We can afford a second home. We don't because owning a house is a major PITA. One is enough for me.

Now it’s a 45 minute direct flight from DC to the beach house and about 3 hours to the mountain house. Considering adding a third along the southern Atlantic coast now.

Oh no, more than this, more than you can imagine.

Just got back from the mountain house. So beautiful this time of year and no hungry grizzlies to worry about! Being able to see beautiful sunrises and sunsets from our ridge top home strengthens my soul. Unfortunately, the Yellowstone poseur crowd is stepping up their silliness (we actually have a Rip like character who lives on our property and looks after things). I have learned some things about avoidance from the Hamptons crowd types who have tried to infiltrate our island beach home. I think the bad year for Wall Streeters will dial them back.

Still, no one would know we have more than 10k acres in the mountains and 20 plus beachfront acres just from looking at us; everyone else should take it down a notch as well.

Seriously. I posted about a leak on dcum...I am still airing out the bedroom and my whole house is in a disarray. I had cleaned the house yesterday and now it is a complete mess again. I have a whole bunch of to-dos and I cannot get ahead at all. I do not envy large homes, I do not envy 2nd homes, I do not want homes in places where hurricanes comes (looking at you Florida). I like to travel and stay in well known hotel chains where I am a loyalty member because I know that I don't want to deal with leaking toilets and moldy beddings that often happen in airBnB. I want my life to be uncomplicated.

The mega-rich don't always buy homes to use them. When you have that much money you have to diversify and holding real estate is just smart.

+1
We are also trying to sell off homes inherited from our parents because no one wants to maintain real estate.

Someone suggested that we buy a mansion because we are South Asians. Don't we host grand "functions" at home especially when our kids get engaged, marry, or have kids? Yes, I would rather host a big fat wedding in some rented space.

I don't even own a first home so no.

+10000!

I knew two people who worked for someone who had multiple houses. One of my friends was hired to bake bread in their kitchen all day, so that if they decided to show up, the house would smell nice. The other was hired to keep all their beautiful fox hunters ridden.

I was more jealous of these friends, who were the hired help, than I would ever be of the home owners.

It’s tough enough maintaining the first home. I don’t want multiple homes to care for. And, I want to travel all over the place, not returning to the same place. No thank you.

This thread is hilarious because we spent the entire pandemic in our only home, which is a 1000 sq ft condo (three people, one dog). We know people with vacation homes. They honestly don’t seem happier or more personally fulfilled. Some don’t even seem to like their second home.

A second home is great if you really love it, but the people I know who love theirs love the whole process of doing projects and fixing things when the arrive. I just don’t have the drive. I want to arrive and relax. I could see a condo somewhere, but I don’t actually want a condo somewhere.
