A federal appeals court on Tuesday temporarily blocked the Manhattan district attorney from getting access to President Donald Trump's tax returns.
A three-judge panel of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York put a hold on a lower court ruling, which said District Attorney Cyrus Vance could get the records immediately. The appeals court granted the stay so it can consider Trump's argument that a subpoena for the documents is overbroad and was issued in bad faith. It was the first courtroom win for Trump's lawyers in more than a year of legal wrangling over the tax returns. Written briefs from the lawyers for both sides are due in the next few weeks, and the court will hold a hearing on the issue Sept. 25. If it rules against Trump— as the lower court did and as the appeals court did last time around— his lawyers would have to ask the Supreme Court to block access. |

Can someone puts this in layman's terms? Are we going to get his records leaked before main-in voting begins or not?
Aren't their two separate cases/lawsuits pursuing these records? |

| The records, if obtained, will not be released publicly. I don't think you should hold out hope for them being released before the election. At some point in the future they may become part of a prosecution case which then may become public. This is not the same as a FOIA for example. |

A leak is not likely at all. If Vance gets the returns before the election, he may be able to indict quickly. But Trump is running out the clock and he may succeed. The other case was for Congress to get the records. They just lost im Appeals Court, but I am sure they will go higher. May not be before the election either. |
