What is the % fraction of FARMs/ high poverty students who illegal immigrants versus poor whites (who presumably are not illegal immigrants) versus "legal" / citizen non-whites?
It seems that the whole "import illegals" ==> worse FCPS argument centers around this % breakdown of how important illegal immigration is to the incidence of poverty in FCPS school populations. |
| I don't think people realize that most ESOL students were born in the U.S. which makes them U.S. citizens. Whether their parents are here illegally is a moot point. There is an increase in these students because Hispanics tend to have more children. They are here to stay. |
Have you spoken with any high school ESOL teachers? Don't think so. And, check out the increase in kids since September. I think you need to recheck your stats. The times are changing. |
Right. I read there are at least 70 different languages spoken by FCPS students (or more). That has to be very challenging for the teachers. |
I'm sure it is, but it's something like 80 percent Spanish at home, at least in Arlington. Besides Amharic everything else is just a percentage point or two, a handful of speakers. Regardless of ones politics, immigration from Latin America is the main cause for the increase in ESL and FRL rates in Northern Virginia. |
This is a problem. They should complain. |
Why in the world do you even have Democrats and Republicans on school boards. School boards should not have anything to do with party affiliation |
This is true. I'm in a different Virginia school system and can relate to every one of these complaints. |
Truth. |
Those who have a GF zip code should indeed be zoned for Langley. It's under-enrolled and McLean is over-enrolled. The solution is to redistrict students closer to Langley than McLean, into Langley. That will essentially be a net positive. The school board specifically has said that they are re-zoning for socioeconomic reasons, meaning that Langley is 'too rich' and Herndon is 'too poor'. So pulling people with GF zip codes into Herndon is a social experiment, end of. The town of Herndon and the County of Fairfax already experimented by making themselves defacto sanctuary cities, and now they want to fix that by punishing individuals who are better off financially. Furthermore, their push to diversify TJ because it's 70% Asian is also ridiculous. It seems the school board in Fairfax County is more interested in social justice than hard work. |
| Never mind the fact that there are poor African American individuals in Fairfax County that would benefit from all the funding being thrown at illegal immigrants. |
The older new students are from outside the U.S. but the little ones were born in this country. ESOL teacher here in the area and I know. I teach appr. 75 students and nearly all of the ones under age 8 were born here. The older ones are 50/50 and we have no way of knowing if they are illegal unless they share how they got here. |
This will not happen. Apartments zoned for McLean and Marshall will be moved to Langley neighborhoods n the early 2020s. Then, in the late 2020s or early 2030s, when the new western high school is opened, part of Herndon will move to the new school and western Great Falls will move from Langley to Herndon. And most of the people moved to Herndon will complain about it, just like you, and then get over it. But thanks for demonstrating that there are, indeed, some Langley parents who moan about “sanctuary cities” and will do everything they can to keep Langley as economically segregated as possible for as long as possible. We always knew this didn’t happen by accident. |
I wish they would hurry up and build the new western hs. My kids are 11 and 6 and it sounds like it won't happen for them. |
