Nope. Freedom Hill was close to 25% last year, not 28-30%. Cunningham Park, also in Vienna, was about 33%. In the near term, Cunningham Park's boundaries will probably not change. If FCPS moves part of Shrevewood to Stenwood, as expected, it's possible that part of Stenwood could move to Freedom Hill. |
"Some" was the end result. The first proposal from FH was the entire apartment complex. Lemon Road already had about 25% low income before the change. The original proposal would have made it a Title One school. FH is not a Vienna school. It is a Tysons school. |
The option that moved more kids from the apartments behind Marshall from Freedom Hill to Lemon Road probably would not have made Lemon Road a Title I school. More likely, it would have left it just below the level entitling the school to additional funding. Freedom Hill is just as much a "Vienna school" as Madison - neither is in the Town of Vienna. Instead, both are in parts of the county with Vienna mailing addresses. |
Not really. |
How come? |
| Do you consider only TOV schools to be Vienna schools?! |
DP here. One difference is that no TOV kids now go to Freedom Hill (some used to, but they were rezoned to Vienna ES), whereas all TOV kids are zoned for Madison. But both Freedom Hill and Madison are FCPS schools located outside the TOV, and FCPS can always decide to send TOV kids to Freedom Hill again or to other high schools than Madison. The only FCPS schools located within the town are Cunningham Park, Louise Archer, Marshall Road and Vienna - all elementary schools. |
Had no idea there were so many low income kids in Vienna and around tysons. Where are these areas located? |
The low-income cohorts for those schools come primarily from the following areas: Cunningham Park - the Cedar Park apartment complex in the Town of Vienna Freedom Hill - apartment complexes behind Marshall HS and off Gallows Road Lemon Road - apartment complexes on both sides of Route 7 near Marshall; also the lower-income residents in Pimmit Hills Of course, if your income qualifies for FARMS, it doesn't matter whether you live in an apartment or a mansion. Also, Pimmit Hills generally is becoming more expensive now. |
. Freedom Hill abuts Tysons Urban Center. |
| Westgate ES near Tysons also has about the same FARMS percentage as Cunningham Park. The FARMS students live in apartment complexes off Anderson and Magarity Roads, the Gates of McLean complex, and Pimmit Hills. |
|
Why are people always complaining about the lack of FARMS at Langley? The school is literally surrounded by multi million dollar houses. We live in a $3m house down the road. Our house is quite average in the area.
Where would these low income people come from? Even the dilapidated knock down houses go for 800k. That being said, not everyone is rich. Plenty of middle class families. Just not low income free lunch kids. |
| Pp here. And I think Langley is under enrolled because many people send their kids to private school. I don’t know the exact stats but I would guess half or more of our colleagues and neighbors send their kids to private school who are zoned for Langley. |
All you need to do is look at a map of the current Langley boundaries to know they could have been drawn differently. Some Langley parents like to emphasize that they aren’t personally responsible for those boundaries, which may be true but is also not especially relevant to this discussion. Within the next few years, Langley’s boundaries will be expanded to pick up some of Tysons, which will increase the FARMS rate there slightly. FCPS has also signaled that, when the western high school is built in about a decade, it will move western Great Falls to Herndon. With these changes, Langley will continue to be among the smaller high schools in the county, unless more of the parents in the area stop sending their kids to privates. |
Those Tysons apartments aren’t cheap. 2 bedrooms will cost $3000+. They aren’t low income housing. |
