Let’s Talk APS High Schools: 4th one or no?

Where are people getting that Wakefield is 37 acres?
I think is like 22.

I doubt it's legal to just redirect bond money that was voted on 2+ years ago. And spare me the it's only fair argument. One looks at the civic assns webpage tells you what the basis of the neighborhoods support: increasing property values and avoiding Wakefield. Period.

I live in that neighborhood and honestly don’t know why you say that. We are worried about our property values going DOWN, which they certainly would if we are rezoned to a crap warehouse school with zero fields or other amenities . If I had a problem with Wakefield, I would not have bought the house in the first place. This neighborhood has always been zoned Wakefield.

i say it because the headline at the top of your civic assn webpage reads, "Neighbors: The Career Center redevelopment project may affect your PROPERTY VALUES and where YOUR CHILDREN attend high school." emphasis/caps aren't mine.

Right, and then it says we have to advocate for EQUAL amenities. Because otherwise, we'll just get screwed again by APS and Arlington Co. If you lived in South Arlington, you'd understand.

I do. South of the pike.

And likely west of George Mason. Of course you don’t want this school. Tough sh:t

Yup. Let's neither pretend we're not looking out for number 1.

This is neighborhood PP again. The previous statement was not from me. I support boundary lines that would balance the economic diversity between Wakefield and the career center. I’ve heard people oppose a new South Arlington HS because they are worried about Wakefield’s numbers. It seems to me though, that the richest parts of South Arlington would still be zoned to Wakefield (e.g. Arlington Ridge, Virginia highlands, Aurora highlands, etc). So I’m not sure I understand this resistance.

Well, that much has been clear all along. But they also don't have the money to take from other projects to give your neighborhood what you're demanding. Seats are seats, so there is no need for a neighborhood boundary. If the crowding gets too bad at the other schools, people will take the option. It's not going to have equivalent amenities, so you probably don't want that to be your zoned anyway. It will wind up with some amenities, but probably just the bare minimum, like what they will have at HB. You want the full service experience? Gotta go to Wakefield. Do you really think Ashton Heights and Lyon Park are going to let you pull them into your boundary? If past is any predictor, you're going to wind up with the rest of 22204 in your boundary AND a neighborhood school without all the amenities.

There is no precedent of a neighborhood school that doesn’t fully serve its walkable community. Quit making stuff up.

It’s funny to me how people think the neighborhood will just take this all development with no amenities. The proposed high school violates so many zoning laws that this will be in litigation for years. We have lawyers, too, you know.

Exactly. Some idiots are now saying Fleet should be choice because of its location. Umm... no. Fleet only got built because it’s a neighborhood school. That area isn’t fvcking around ( not my neighborhood). It’s not comparable to the ed center. All of WL community wants to stay at that school. No one is willing to leave for either ytown or WF. They were willing to go through with NVD’s terrible idea, out of desperation. The neighborhood around CC is a totally different dynamic. They were savy enough to seek out Henry, and are OK with WF. They aren’t going to roll over on a bunch of BS construction with no benefit. They’ll make Glen Carlyn look like child’s play.
We should spend the money once, and do it right.
Arl tech isn’t getting the Interst they hoped. No duh.
Build the 4th. If you live west of that pike work toward advocacy of balanced demographics. Or sell your house. Whatever.

Hey we live West of the Pike and support this. Don’t alienate until you are sure who is reading! N Arlington you aren’t the only ones with lawyers or organization efforts anymore!

Write to the school board.
Concentrate on Goldstein, Kanninen, and O’Grady.
The other 2 are likely a lost cause.

Can we talk about the CB? I want them to give APS the Walter Reed CC!!! Use it for amenities for the 4th H.S. it is so close.

And senior centers and the like can be in much smaller land. Come on, people. Would that help make the CC site a much better option for a 4th high school?!

Can of worms
But knock yourself out. I’ve always felt that was a ton wasted space, but I don’t use it- easy for me to say.

I live right next to it and agree it’s total wasted space. I’ve always thought that could be used for something better.

The boundaries are predictable. You know this. So, it's either an option school with fewer amenities, or they give you your neighborhood school, but not all the other things. You pick.

Then it just won’t happen.
Just like the ed center isn’t happening.
Here’s the secret. They don’t want to do anything.

If you do that, do you leave the Patrick Henry school untouched, or do you get to take it all? Maybe we could build a new school at Walter Reed to replace Patrick Henry?

If you're going to be talking to the CB, can you also tell them that the Fairlington Community Center needs to be turned back into an elementary school? Thanks.

Well selfishly I’d love an elementary school there because that neighborhood is probably getting moved out of Fleet, but it’ll never happen.

Don’t know how much room there is at Walter Reed. We absolutely cannot build a second class high school. If it needs both plots to have everything the other school have, do it. The whole county suffers if this H.S. is any less than the others. And the CB has to understand that.

And listen, we won’t be zoned for it. But I cannot fathom that we do anything less than 100%. I get there are very important programs at Walter Reed. But those programs can be moved. Aren’t those better suited to some of this commercial space than a H.S.?
