Seriously, has anyone outside of Virginia ever heard of JMU?

No, I had never heard of it until I moved to VA.

JMU is a regional school. Most of the graduates work in this region too.

And people do care where you got your degree especially at top companies and academia.

Have you seen which companies recruit at JMU? How it ranks? Where its graduates go for further Ed?

Didn't think so. Come back when you do. JMU and VT and other school graduates do just fine.

As to alumni connections, GMU is very well interwined with the economic engines driving growth in the NoVa area, whether in IT, aerospace, government, etc. and there are plenty of professors you can network off of as well.

Hint for the clueless: no one gives a sh*t ten years our where you went to school. It's all about performance. If you can't performm, you're out on your ass.

As my grandfather use to say, put that in your pipe and smoke it. And he never went to college yet rose to a senior VP position in an aerospace manufacturing company.

Wow, JMU must be going downhill if it's lumped with schools like George Mason and CNC. When I went to UVA in 2000-2004, JMU was considered the next choice after UVA and W&M....except for ENG in which case VA Texh is better than all 3.

VT is probably the best know because of sports. JMU is a little less well known but fairly so.

Every other public school in Va - Longwood, Radford, GMU, ODU, CNU....pretty unknown.

My son is currently a student at JMU and his housemates are from CT, MD, Ohio, and VA. Lots of out-of-state kids there.

I went there in the 1980s. Have to say this thread is amusing-almost like someone has an axe to grind against James Madison.

Seems odd. Never had any problem with name recognition with my alma mater in Philadelphia main line suburbs for what it's worth. JMU is viewed as a pretty good school by most folks here....although a lot of folks mistake it as a private school.

Really? I thought JMU played Div 3? Not a knock; it's a great school (yes I heard of it growing up in WV) but didn't think it has much in the way of sports...

Look, I am no JMU proponent - at best it measures up to large, second tier Nationals. But it ranks significantly higher than the other schools you mention, including Mason.

How about looking at apples to apples - for example how does JMU or the other schools measure up against typical National State Us such as Rutgers, Maryland or Penn State rather than CNU, GMU or Montclair?

This thread is flamebait....I remember a "Which is better? JMU or VT thread which went on for, I kid you not, 25 pages. Between threads covering VT, JMU, N Arlington vs McLean, the only thing worth popcorn anymore is the "Which state is better? MD or VA" threads.
