Yes, they are cesspools of ignorance.

And present excellent opportunities for progressives to move there and make a difference.

Unless, of course, you really just want to live in your privileged bubble and sneer at the less educated and less fortunate?

The South already has a lot of progressives! And they have been working hard to change things against a strong headwind. Disheartening to read people painting a region with such a broad brush.

And the arrogance is astounding, but I guess there are no racists and MAGA up North. They even though seem to have a problem with Asians.

My family on the West Coast has visited the South many times. Would have supported my DC if they wanted to go to school there.

Then why is your state government so f-ed up?

Just proving my point about the arrogance of people painting with such a broad negative brush about the South.

Google is your friend, but here are few reasons

— gerrymandering (many articles available if you look for them)

— vote suppression (much online about this, too)

—the abandonment of the South by national Democrats over the last 30 years (Texas being one example)

Hope this helps.

So the liberals have no chance of gaining power. Good luck with that.

I prefer to live in an area with fewer a-holes.

It’s not my job to fix your mess.

+1. Not our kids job either. They should go to college in a state that has some respect for this country including the women of this country. And for science. Let's have some respect for science. that is good for starters

By all means.

What does science say about the deleterious effects living in an echo chamber?

Or, if you prefer, what does science say about the benefits of living in a politically diverse community?

You’ve got some reading to do.

Should I listen to some ranter on dcum or actual scientists winning grants to do scientific research for cancer and climate and energy, etc.

why would I send my stem student off the some backwards state that approves of flgutting scientific research funding in this country? Answer is that I should not.

Approves of gutting*.

Only one of us is ranting, my friend.

And what you should do is look up the actual research re: the benefits of living in a politically diverse community (as well as the personal and societal costs of failing to do so) for yourself. The data are rather compelling.

With respect to your STEM kid, you should let them go where they choose. Once again, advising you based on science—research on children of controlling parents shows remarkably poor outcomes these kids.

You send your stem student off to a climate change denier state for science education if you choose. I see the benefits in choosing a pro science funding environment. Good luck to your kid.

Memphis. We live in the south, and Rhodes is a great little LAC, but I didn't include it on my DD's list of schools to check out because of things I read on Reddit about campus safety. It's probably fine, but I just didn't want my kid living there for 4 years, I would've worried about her too much.

+1. Tennessee is heavily gerrymandered. The ability for Memphis to have any political power or help itself is gone. Love you Memphis but you are in for a rough ride.

One of the reasons I love Philly is that we do a good job of keeping losers like PP out of our city.

Well, given that red states:
- ban books
- ban discussion of gender
- ban gay people from mentioning their families
- prosecute people who _leave_ their states for an abortion
- suggest that people with different political views don’t deserve police protection (e.g. the Mahoning county Ohio sheriff)
- force college students to take courses with historically inaccurate “patriotic” content (e.g. university of Iowa)

I guess you are saying you wouldn’t allow your kid to go to school in a red state, because they work so hard to eradicate diversity of opinion, right?

When political diversity means destruction of funding for scientific research then "political diversity" is not helping students interested in pursuing scientific research. This is not a hard concept to grasp.

The current full court press effort by foreign countries trying to attract the STEM research talent from this country is not great for your STEM research kid. Why not help your kid to learn about what funds research and what is happening to that funding? You going to fund the grants?
