It’s actually almost 16,000 more applicants. Mostly out of state. 13,500ish more OOS. If you don’t have to write any supplementals, why not apply? So different from when my son applied in 2022.

Appears to be a foregone conclusion the total first year applications to UVA will exceed 90K this year.

UVA ADMISSIONS ALREADY SAID 82k.

- generally increased interest in southern schools

- inflation / cost / trend toward public flagships over costly privates

- trend away from urban campuses

- rising reputation of UVA

- removal of supplemental essays.

I think removal of supplemental essays is a huge reason. It’s very easy to just add another school to the list if all you have to do is pay another application fee.

I have a son at UVA so I’m not knocking it at all - I just think that’s probably the case.

Everywhere. When you have no essay, cost is the only barrier. Now it's just like Pitt or Clemson or Northeastern.

So you think an extra 11,000 applications this year, are about equally from more in-state, out-of-state and international? Was the essay optional this year (but not last year)?

Last year, there was a required essay and an optional essay, in addition to the CA essay. This year, all you had to do was check the box and put in your credit card number. No more extra essays of any kind.

Great stats and I am sorry about the rejection. Really shouldn't be from the stats. However, I am curious how parents evaluate "extremely strong personal statement" as that seems quite subjective to the school and their mission statement.

Rising reputation? Please help me understand this- I thought UVA always had a great reputation and was popular

The football team had a good year, probably helped with applications. I know the numbers went up after the basketball team won national championship

No, those numbers are very real for the actual students who got in. That’s what they got. You want to argue that those figure would be diluted if the test optional kids had supplied their tests …. But we don’t know that because most likely those kids would never have gotten in under test-required. With UVA receiving 90,000 applications this calendar year, they will receive even more in 2027 should they elect to go test required. Of those, there will be plenty of top scoring kids for UVA to pick from. I sincerely doubt the numbers are going to dip. Especially wit only 6,000 in the class, 90,000 applications, and a push back to meritocracy

When UVA was test-required (2020 CDS), the range was lower because it reflected nearly the whole class. If testing became required again, I’d expect the median to come back down because the pool would be broader.

The fact that you want to factor in some mythical lower scores represented by the test optional students is irrelevant. Students in NOVA need to aim for the 75th percentile. Please don't keep saying this because parents rely on this forum and get their hopes up when someone says to ignore SCHEV.

Look, the 2 dropped supplementals were always variations on the same two themes every year:

1) tell us about your family connection to UVA (if any) or what UVA means to you personally. And

2) portions of The Grounds sit atop land which was once a slave plantation; write a reflection of what that means to you personally.

UVA was forced into dropping legacy, as they should; all public universities should drop legacy entirely from admissions consideration. Legacy is pure nepotism. And,

UVA was also under investigation for racial discrimination in admissions and hiring. It was no secret UVA discriminated against certain racial groups by judging students on the color of their skin instead of their academic merit alone. In other words, the racism known as DEIA.

The second essay prompt was pure DEIA. It had to be scrapped.

Neither supplemental essay should have ever existed in the first place.

If you are in NOVA, it is very hard to get into UVA even with 35+ ACT and 1550+ SAT and incredible ECs. You are compared to the peers at your high school. At my child’s school those peers also have great applications. I have no idea how they pick one great kid over another. For every amazing kid who got an acceptance tonight there’s an amazing kid who didn’t.
It does all work out in the end. I mean, if your absolute dream is UVA do the community college associate’s degree route and transfer.
