WHAT? You are so tone deaf. Only a striver mom would say that schools below the top 100 don’t have students trying to go to med school, law school, etc.!! These are schools like Auburn, Loyola Marymount, Temple, University of Missouri, BYU, University of Tennessee, University of Arizona, University of South Carolina, VCU, JMU, University of Iowa, Elon, SDSU, University of Vermont, University of Alabama. All ranked below 100 and filled with smart kids aiming for law school and med school.

I live in the South and know many happy, successful professionals who have gone to Auburn, Sewanee, Alabama, USC, UTK, and lesser-known regional colleges! Unless you’re planning on teaching at Yale, working at Goldman Sachs or clerking for the Supreme Court, it really doesn’t matter.

100% true. Immigrants and FGLI families don’t get this though.

Is it any coincidence that the schools without a lot of “immigrants” (read:Asians) would be the ones you cite?

Schools full of nice white kids who can have their ideal college experience without those Asians and poor people getting in the way

Love these suggestions. 10% or less Asian students.

The white girl who was tragically killed at Brown by the shooter was from Alabama and considered a brilliant, immensely talented kid (and probably full pay based on where she is specifically from and her parents’ jobs).

I assume if DCUM knew nothing about her, she would just automatically be derided as a striver because she wasn’t satisfied with attending Alabama or Auburn.

Southern poster…a lot of kids down here go up North or to Southern privates for a change of scenery or they’re looking for a different campus culture. Nothing wrong with the popular Southern flagships, but they aren’t the best fit for every kid. (My kid is not at our flagship because they wanted something different). However, I don’t think anyone down here would label kids who go up North as “strivers”.

Because they’re white.

So…kids from the South who attend Ivy League schools (a lot BTW) aren’t strivers…they just want a change of scenery or a different campus culture (which they could get at Penn State or UMD).

Got it.

But it’s not a racial thing at all. Not one bit.

Asian-American and transplanted Southerner here. The Southern flagships are seen as “havens” of sorts for those fleeing the “Asian” striver schools but the flagships are changing because the South is drawing a lot of immigrants. Visiting those colleges with my kid was eye-opening. Just google the clubs and activities section of the university websites and see how many different cultural affinity groups there are.

They’re de facto segregation academies for 2026

I’m confused why parents here believe they can avoid Asian people by sending them to state flagships. Asian students dominate the majors that make money; particularly the stem subjects are filled with Asian students after the freshman filter.

Alabama is less than 2% Asian. That’s why Roll Tide moms love it. Their kid gets to be in an “honors” college with no strivers.

Rice is a pretty nerdy school with kids aiming very, very high. It’s not the typical dcum striver, rather it’s the new normal striver.

What is a striver?
