She seemed to be complaining about something that happened as soon as she started her pass. I kept rewinding to hear what she was saying but I couldn’t make it out. Suni responded “I know, are they telling them to do that?” or something. I wonder what was happening at that end of the beam.

It might have been some lighting issue or flashbulb

Based on Suni’s interview and some reporting from the arena, people in the crowd were telling others to be quiet and not cheer, so the place was jarringly silent. Gymnasts are used to background noise.Suni said that it was so quiet it felt like everyone could hear her breathing.

Are you suggesting the American contingent would go along with some sabotage request to shush? Sometimes people just have a bad day. It’s not about being the best in practice or warm ups you have to be the best when it counts.

No, they're saying the silence made them uncomfortable because it's not typically how they perform. Normally there's background noise and instead the silence threw off their rhythm.

Ok. Seems like the other athletes are managing just fine.

Is that joke? An actual majority of them FELL off of the beam. Hardly “managing just fine” for the literal Olympic gold medal on the line for most of the gymnasts to fall off the apparatus

+1 and even those that didn't fall had serious balance issues that resulted in major deductions. Only D'Amato and Andrade completed routines without major issues.

That doesn't mean there was a problem with the equipment or some distraction in the crowd though. Sometimes an apparatus just goes that way. Falling can be contagious because watching other gymnasts fall puts it into your head and beam is the kind of apparatus where just feeling a little off can cause a major error because the margin for error is nil.

Even D'Amato who won the gold medal looked slightly off to me -- instead of really secure landings in her skills she was staying up on her toes and looked a bit tentative. But no fall and no major wobble plus a rock solid dismount made her the best on the day. I'm really happy for her because she had a fantastic meet but finished *just* out of medal contention in the all around and then was also fairly close on uneven bars and floor but still not in medal contention. I think like Jordan Chiles she really wanted one individual medal to show for having truly a fantastic olympics overall and to get a GOLD on beam was really validating.

Actually I feel this way about several of the results. While it was a bummer to see Simone get silver on floor since she's so dominant in that event I loved seeing Andrade win and get an individual gold -- she is really the only gymnast out there who I think can actually go toe to toe with Biles so I think it's great for her and the sport for her to win there. Thrilled for Jordan Chiles to get that bronze on floor too and not bothered at all that it came after an inquiry because they've been underscoring her floor routine the entire meet and probably should have challenged her difficulty score earlier in the meet. She's doing really hard gymnastics incredibly well and I think she earned that medal.

But I am wondering what everybody else feels about the big fake eyelashes? (Track and field women wear them too). It just looks stupid to me.......... but am getting use to it.

What do you think?

I think you don't understand people different than you have different cultures and dress and style differently than you. You don't have to like every style every culture has.

Oh. (Looking you up and down)

Which culture are the Kardashian lashes from? and don’t try to say Armenian.

I’m confused. Aren’t our Olympic athletes quite literally representing… the United States of America? Isn’t that our culture?

Sorry you're confused
But no, the culture in NYC is different than the culture in Austin, San Francisco, Duluth, Miami, Salt Lake City, Nashville just to name major cities so there is no confusion.
But all are American, just variations

Still not clear? Maybe we start by defining the word "culture" so we're on the same page

Yes. Do that. Also explain what it means to compete for the United States of America in international competition, as opposed to representing NYC or Miami or Duluth in national competition.

Do you think we have a single unified national culture where everyone does their hair and makeup the same way, regardless of age, ethnicity, and location? What are the official "USA" eye makeup and lash styles? When do younger generations get to have input on them?

I don’t care what she does with her lashes (although I do think they’re stupid looking) you’re the one who brought up “culture”.

(Since you’re obviously simple-minded: these ugly lashes and talon nails aren’t “muh culture!”, they’re just a trendy style preference. The “culture” which supports these dumb trends is our current US culture, or TikTok so maybe Chinese?, so really, WTH are you even talking about?)

She didn't bring up culture, she's responding to your response to me. I didn't bring it up either. I think you are the simple minded one blathering on about the look of these gymnasts just because it's not your preference .

The rest of what you wrote sounds like nonsense. I can guess what's prompting your tirade. So sad you don't get to see gymnasts whose look you like.

Okay. You’re continually responding to a sub thread in which someone said she wears fake lashes because it’s her culture, as though you are that person.

You’re still a moron. Fake lashes and talon nails aren’t a product of a different culture. Particularly for a team all representing one culture.

What culture wears heavy set lashes that have an unattractive curl?

I have no idea whether this is the case in gymnastics but when I was a figure skater we were taught to do really dramatic makeup because normal makeup doesn’t show up in an arena (and the glare off the ice flatters no one). It’s likely the fake lashes are meant to be seen at the distance of the audience/judges podium not close up.

False lashes are super popular with Gen Z. They are big into makeup tutorials, skin care, the works.

What a strange thing to fixate on.

I mean usually 0-1 out of 8 fall off not 5 out of 8. It’s definitely a story. It’s no fun to watch the supposed best of the best on beam when they all fall off. They need to change the scheduling or change the weird silence they were complaining about or something, because no one wants to watch everyone fall off one by one and the medal go to someone who isn’t close to the best, just because she managed to keep her body on the beam.

It doesn’t matter if they were the best yesterday or the best tomorrow, they get one chance. Unless they plan on filing an official complaint it is what it is.

It happens sometimes and you can't prevent it with scheduling or noise level. Falling on beam is contagious.

I watched the beam final with the British commentators and one of them talked about a beam final at worlds where every single gymnast fell off, some more than once, and the last gymnast of the day won god with a safe (meaning not hard) routine because she stayed on the beam. That's just how beam works some days. It's the apparatus with the biggest mental component.

And actually I think it is impressive D'amato and Andrade were able to turn in solid, error-free routines on a day when a lot of others (including their teammates) were struggling. It means they were able to stay focused and not let the apparatus get to them. They deserved to win.

Does anyone know why Andrade’s score was so low? She didn’t have any big mistakes and still finished in 4th. What was her qualifying score? Did she skip out on a difficult element?
(Overseas so I didn’t see the prelims, just last night’s event finals.)

She must have dropped an element. Her usual start value is a 6.100 and her beam final was a 5.700. Her best score was 14.500 in qualifying, and then she scored 14.133 in the Team and All Around. All of those scores were with the 6.100 start value.

Apparently keeping her body on the beam in this particular competition DOES mean she is the best of the best since half of them couldn’t manage that.
