Everyone fell off at the same spot, too. And Simone was furious. She was talking furiously and her coach was trying to shush her. She seemed to be complaining about something that happened as soon as she started her pass. I kept rewinding to hear what she was saying but I couldn’t make it out. Suni responded “I know, are they telling them to do that?” or something. I wonder what was happening at that end of the beam.

It might have been some lighting issue or flashbulb

Based on Suni’s interview and some reporting from the arena, people in the crowd were telling others to be quiet and not cheer, so the place was jarringly silent. Gymnasts are used to background noise.Suni said that it was so quiet it felt like everyone could hear her breathing.

Are you suggesting the American contingent would go along with some sabotage request to shush? Sometimes people just have a bad day. It’s not about being the best in practice or warm ups you have to be the best when it counts.

No, they're saying the silence made them uncomfortable because it's not typically how they perform. Normally there's background noise and instead the silence threw off their rhythm.

Ok. Seems like the other athletes are managing just fine.

They’ve gotta be exhausted by now.

Loved the podium shot from the floor routine with Biles and Chiles bowing to Andrade. Love to see so much comradery between competitors

I saw the interview pp is referring to. Suni was asked what she thought happened on beam today (almost everyone fell). She said that, for her, she just felt like it was too quiet and that’s unusual. She wasn’t making excuses or whining about it. She answered the question with poise and grace and did so with a smile on her face. These women have been inspiring to watch not only for their athleticism but also their resilience and the way they’ve cheered on and supported one another.

Is that joke? An actual majority of them FELL off of the beam. Hardly “managing just fine” for the literal Olympic gold medal on the line for most of the gymnasts to fall off the apparatus

Does anyone think the judges purposely put Simone behind Rebeca in the floor finals after her petty AF looooong salute at the end of her routine? (Which I thought was hilarious and amazing). Obviously she was going to lose 0.6 for the two out of bounds landings but in the AA she got a 15.0. Without the deductions for out of bounds that means her routine today was worth a 14.7 to the judges. Was it really that much less clean than the AA floor routine? Or were the judges being petty right back at her?

I don’t think judges decide the lineup. I thought it was based on qualification scores or is a random draw.

I meant put her behind Rebeca as in, made sure her score was lower than Rebeca’s.

Biles herself said "Rebeca has this" when she finished her routine. She went way out, she knew she was getting big deductions. But she did a ton this Olympics despite an injury and should be proud of that.

And no one put up the scores they put in qualifying. They were all off.
