BCC student with weapon today

Anonymous
A firearm is a gun. A gun was seen in the bathroom on a student by another student. I don’t know which bathroom.
Both students were BCC students.

Later in the morning there was a separate incident with a knife involving a BCC student that occurred outside the school building.

It's not that I don't get it. But sending MCPS and MCPD the questions directly puts pressure on them to respond. Posting here on DCUM does nothing to them.

I didn't say that because I think MCPS/MCPD are transparent and responsive. I said that because continuously questioning and confronting them is how we'll eventually get answers.

How do you know "y'all" haven't repeatedly been asking district and p unit questions, and have not received answers? This is a forum, you know, to discuss and ask questions.

Ok. Keep asking then.

That too bad you have had to ask.

+1 Boundaries of these large MCPS schools are far reaching.

Many students who live in "B" or "CC" and elsewhere can afford to and do attend private schools. Many do not. It is not the bastion of privileged kids that some on this board seem to think.

And regardless of school, no students deserves to attend a school with other students allegedly bringing weapons into the premises.

Dear Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Families,
I am writing to share information regarding a serious incident involving B-CC. Earlier today, we received a report that a student allegedly had a weapon on campus and had fled the building after being seen with the alleged weapon. School staff, MCPS Safety and Security staff, and MCPD officers immediately began collaborating to identify the student, investigate the incident, and determine appropriate next steps. These next steps included determining appropriate safety measures at B-CC for the remainder of the day and coordinating with our police partners the timing of community notification so as to not impact their immediate and ongoing investigation or responsive actions. B-CC will maintain an increased security presence for the remainder of today out of an abundance of caution.
We are committed to providing a safe school environment for all our students and staff and threats against our school will not be tolerated. The possession of weapons on school grounds is illegal, dangerous, and disruptive to school operations. I encourage all parents to talk with their children about this issue and share that this kind of behavior could be criminal and subject to prosecution by law enforcement.
As a reminder, if you see or hear something, please say something. Please do not hesitate to share anything you believe may be a concern to our school community. Information related to the ANONYMOUS MD Safe Schools Tip Line can be found on the back of every student ID card.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school at 240-740-0400.
Sincerely,
Staten Money
Shelton Mooney, Ed.D.
Principal

What was point of his second letter sent Tuesday, a day after, at a late 1030pm? BCC parents do you know?

Yep. The point of his second letter is that a couple of parents on the listserv made demands for communication from Dr. Mooney "today." So he was trying to be responsive, even though this is an investigation that the school isn't in charge of conducting and he can't just share information on demand on any given day.

NO. PLENTY OF PARENTS, INCLUDING ME, WERE OUTRAGED THAT HE COULDN'T EVEN TELL US THERE WAS A GUN ON CAMPUS IN HIS FIRST LETTER.
THAT'S HOW DUMB AND INCOMPETENT HE IS.

He should have told us. This is episode number 2345 in which this Principal has demonstrated poor judgment. Just this year alone. The second, late-night missive that same day acknowledged the weapon was a gun. He should have said so that very morning, and avoided the massive anger from parents who had to hear it from rumors and the media!

Principal Mooney has to go. Now.

Up thread 5/14, 15:48:
[Mooney] says what he thinks should be said, lacking any substance

If he didn't have any substance to communicate, why send a letter?

+1,000,000 There are a host of reasons that his incompetence should lead to his termination. His inability to manage messaging to parents (even with the restrictions placed by CO) is just one. How about last year when a chemistry teacher put all of the Jewish kids in one class in a group separate from the other kids.....what did we hear from Mooney? Nada. But when an English teacher he did not like was alleged to have made a racially insensitive comment, there was a community email out that day (before ever talking to the teacher in question to find out what happened) besmirching the teacher.

So students will be excused from school until the investigation concludes? We're being asked to send kids to school and we don't have information that this alleged student is coming to school is on campus? You do know MCPS has a duty to protect our kids while in their care?
