Did your kids take less rigorous courses - for example Cal AB instead of BC, or AP Psych or APES instead of AP Chem? How did they maintain a 4.0 through four years of schooling? My sophomore would love to land at UVA but it seems impossible

Nope. Calc BC junior year. Differential equations. AP Chemistry etc etc.
Maintained it by working their butt off. Maybe retook one quiz the entire time.

My son is a 1st year at UVA now and he was the same. 4.0 UW. He was in Arlington and they didn’t allow retakes. He worked his butt off, and probably even studied too much at times. Calc BC as a junior and Multivariable Calculus senior year.

Strange. That’s what APS was known for…As. They just put out a new policy last week to reign in re-test/re-takes..and starting now you can’t re-test and get anything higher than an 80%. But anyone can re-take/re-year to a B. Which HS?

Yes, I don't get "worked butt off with no retakes at APS." My daughter and friends are there and they all have unweighted 4.0s (or close to it), take things over all the time and can barely read and write. It's one of my great regrets that we did not move her for high school.

It’s exactly why we moved our kids to private from APS for high school. Zero regrets.

NP. Do you honestly think the retakes are a good thing? The lack of deadlines, etc?

I’m going to guess fewer than a TJ person thinks should get in and more than a non-TJ person thinks should get in.

Haha!! TJ and UVA have a love-hate relationship. Sometimes comparable stat kids will be able to get into UVA from base school than from TJ.

Is it because they get too many applicants from TJ? DC said it is better for her to apply RD and we are waiting.

no retakes or redos allowed at his school
Private schools don't allow retakes, late work or use rolling grade books. I really hope parents put pressure on their school boards to do away with that nonsense because it doesn't prepare kids for college and none of that is allowed. I know several teachers are pushing their principals to end these Covid related measures.

None?

My TJ kid got into UVA and VT yesterday. The missus kept nagging me all 4 years that it would never happen because he went to TJ rather than his base school.

4.4 GPA (weighted) and aerospace engineering at both schools. I have degrees from three top 25s, and I taught at UVA for several years. I was able to coach my son a bit on his essays. For example, he wrote a few negative things about himself, and I asked him to either reframe those experiences in a positive light or include other, better examples.

There was a PP doubting that anyone could go without ever getting anything lower than an A. My son just got the first B+ of his life in multivariable calculus in January (1-semester dual enrollment course). I teach in Arlington, and I know there are a ton of students who have never had anything less than an A. APS doesn't have an A-, so it's a quite generous A at 90-100. There is no A+ either. My son wasn't crushed to get his B+. In fact, he hasn't even brought it up to me and seems to just keep living his life. But I have seen more than one high schooler basically lose it when getting less than an A in one of my courses. I feel like bumping someone up from an 89.3 to a 90 is like giving them 10 free points at a school like mine. I just won't do it and think a B+ is a very good grade. Plus, I am very much against inflating grades, but I'd better stop before I rant.

Anyone know - for the UVA Wise option- is it guaranteed for all in-state wait listed students who received the offer in their letter or is there another application process or limit on number of students who can choose to attend the Year in Wise.

If you are taking your kids out of public school and paying tens of thousands of dollars a year for private school for those reasons, then you’re just an idiot. Sorry.

At my DC’s school, a few minor errors on the midterm or finals would lead to a lower score (20% of grade) and it could drop your grade from an A to A- so easily. How can these kids, so many, not make ONE single error in 4 years? NONE in 4 years? Is this because schools allow re-testing? Or are midterms not 20% of grades at these schools?

My DD has a 4.0 uw. Her midterms and finals are 20% of the semester grade. Each quarter is 40%. She has received a B+ on a midterm, but her quarter grades were high enough to end up with an A.

Well obviously. Any time the talent pool is watered down - even more - it helps our kids.

Thanks for sharing!! I was teaching at a well known university, top 2 in the field. When I let the students know that the lowest grade I have given is A-, half the class dropped out. Because no one wants A-, only A is acceptable!! I think this is the result of the current system that to get into top schools, kids are expected to have all As with 4.0 perfect GPA. A- is considered a failure.
