Can a normal smart kid get into an ivy?

My kid has the scores and grades. He plays 3 sports and is on several academic teams. He is not nationally ranked in anything but good at everything. DH and I both attended T25 colleges and ivy grad schools. Our kid is better than DH and me in every single category.

Receiving an ROTC scholarship can help with admissions into top schools.

Interesting. How and why would that matter ? Several top schools are pretty hostile to the military generally and ROTC in particular (e.g., banned ROTC).

It’s a huge hook. Because Ivy League schools don’t get many ROTC applications but they have the programs and need to fill the slots.

This, plus guaranteed tuition from the government

Which the parents gladly repay to get out of military service when DC gets into the Ivy of their choice. Another scam.

Where are all these supposed white athletes that are more competitive than Asians at academic contests lol. They are non-existent at MOP, US Physics Team, US Chemistry Team, etc.

Anonymous wrote:Yes. DC attends a top Ivy, and only about half the kids are hooked. You do need to excel at something, though, in order to be admitted unhooked.

Isn't excelling at one thing a hook?

That’s a spike. Spikes aren’t as effective as they once were.

No. You need a hook a big one.

My normal smart kid got in ED to an Ivy.
We feel very lucky and don’t really have a great explanation for why he got on over others. He’s a fantastic kid and I would pick him over any other kid I know for odds of being successful (work ethic, charm, empathy) but how did that get across in his application? We don’t know. We feel lucky and grateful. 1520 and top grades in all the hardest classes, of course, but a lot of kids have that. Captain of two varsity sports. Held a significant paying job outside of school

For an Asian to stand out, they need to be doing something other than the above. You guys are a dime a dozen and then we don’t see you winning all the Nobel prizes or starting tech companies. You will make good worker bees for those white kids though.

Using only your myopically narrow definition of "merit," I suppose.

Yes, I use the same "myopic" definition that the entire rest of the world outside the USA uses. Sorry your kid wouldn't hack it, though.

Why should I care about what the rest of the world does, when we live in the USA? My kid is ten and will do just fine, judging from the standardized testing thus far. But we're not raising him that way.

You need to care because the SC just ruled race-based admissions unconstitutional. You will be judged on stats and accomplishments, metrics at which the Asians excel.

In order for Asians to significantly improve their chances of acceptance at top schools, they have to start applying as non-STEM/business majors. Asians are limiting their own chances by clustering in fields they have already saturated.

This is really nasty. Would you want your kids to say something like this? Be better.

I guess you missed all the posts with the Asians putting down all other races as not as smart. If you dish it out, you better be strong enough to get it back.

You will see a lot more Asians winning Nobels in the next 20 to 30 years. Also, in Silicon Valley 20% of startups are founded by Indians and Indians constitute roughly 1% of the US population. Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, Adobe and many top tech firms now have immigrant CEOs.

Meh. NP. Both of my kids are high stats white students and have been treated terribly by their Asian classmates.

And the startups that I am talking about are unicorns.
