Psst. Hey sweetie. Not sure if you're aware, but race-based affirmative action was struck down by the Supreme Court. It doesn't matter if they're lying (assuming they even exist).

Hey Sweetie, Don’t know if you heard, but kids can write about it in their supplemental diversity essay or common app essay and it can be used that way.

They can also use the kid’s name and zip code.

DP here. It is absolutely used, without a doubt. I know students who would have not otherwise been admitted.

OFC it's used. It's just not "quotas" and it's not explicit. There are LOTS of proxies for affirmative-action of all types to achieve the race, gender, SES, etc. mix the schools want. Anyone who doesn't admit that is pretty willfully ignorant.

I'm not commenting on the right/wrong of doing so. But, it is possible to get what they want w/o the traditional understind of "affirmative action."

Again, what proof in a post SC ruling do you have that affirmative action was used? Not what you think they could do, not what you might do, but bona fide proof.

These people don't have any proof. All they have is the same belief they've held since before the ruling: that black and Latino students at elite universities stole the spots from more deserving white and Asian students. We'll never have merit in their eyes, no matter what the law says.

I worked in the field for a long time. I e seen it in practice in a lot of different contexts. You’re a fool - or willfully ignorant- if you think this wont happen.

First of all no one stole anything from me. I was first Gen at a sh—-y state school in the Midwest. My kid isnt college aged yet. I have no dog in the fight.

Second of all, you’re chip on your shoulder comments about what I believe are simple not true. You know sh— about me or my beliefs. And you cannot be further from the truth.

Third, will “affirmative action “ as you are using it be gone? Yes. But schools can absolutely “shape” their class using other proxies. They also have that right. And they will do that. Why do you think they ask for the other information beyond test scores and objective metrics? Just being nosy? Lol.

You can argue whether they SHOULD shape classes using non-score/gpa information. But you cannot legitimately argue that information won’t be used. It will. It is.

What are your qualifications? What positions did you hold and where?

Nice of you to call someone's child a POS, seems you are an even bigger POS.

Wondering what your usage of ""normal"" means. Seriously. Is that dog-whistle for something? Sounds low-key racist...

South Arlington and only certain kinds, though?

And this one is just straight up racist...no low-key about it...

UVA will not accept top students from OOS. They know they likely cannot reel them in, so they get waitlisted.

Wrong

ACH has 16 UVA acceptances so far posted on Instagram account.

5 as of now...def not 16. Btw, ACHS class of 2024 has over 1,000 students just to right-size the loose statistics being thrown around this absolutely astonishingly toxic discussion. Just sayin'

My kid’s guidance counselor told her the opposite.

A while back I posted the official UVa Admissions statistics from last year in a different thread, with numbers obtained from the UVa Alumnae magazine. Those numbers for the class which entered UVa in Fall 2023 indicated the highest accept rate phase was ED, second highest rate was EA, and lowest accept rate was RD. Part of the RD admission rate drop is that more than half of the openings already had been filled in ED and EA.

As also is usually true for W&M and VPI, roughly 2/3rds of the UVa ugrad openings are reserved for in-state. The other 1/3 are out-of-state (and nearly always full pay). All of those universities lose money on in-state ugrads and fill that financial hole with OOS full-pay.

They have accepted many top OOS students every recent year, including for Fall 2023 matriculation, which is contrary to the post above.

True. Two classmates of my DC turned down ivy for it and were OOS admits.
