This is demented. I can use the same logic to rob you of anything.

It is none of your business what I wear. I have the right to be safe to wear the most expensive or cheapest cloth.

Advertising one’s privilege is pretty tacky. Why make yourself a target by antagonizing those not as lucky as you?

Come on, people have cell phones. People have nice belts and coats and shoes. It’s not like it’s a $100k diamond ring or something - regular working people can save up for a Canada Goose jacket if that’s what they really want. People are getting carjacked if they drive a regular car like a Hyundai or a Honda, or a luxury car. Our city shouldn’t be this dangerous.

However given the vast inequality in wealth distribution it’s simply not appropriate to show off one’s material privilege.

If anything, only reason people should think twice about what they wear is because DC has opted to behave as third world city.

Third World?
Your ignorance is evident in the use of this phrase.

Daily murders and people here are tone policing phrases. Brilliant.

That's progressivism on 2023.

Do you think hong Kong has this problem

Can confirm, you can wear your Gucci stuff all over Hong Kong with no fear of being robbed.

The idea that “vibrant urban life” means thugs robbing people in broad daylight is an American invention.

Because most of the "Gucci" stuff in HK is counterfeit. As for Moncler, the people wearing that in HK are the ultra-wealthy and they can kill anyone they want

You clearly haven’t spent any real time out here.

HK is one of the largest concentrations of high end shopping on earth. Yes, there is obviously some fake stuff around but there is tons of the real thing walking all over, and nobody gets robbed.

Most progressives are critical theorists so they view the poor as oppressed. To them, street crime is justice. That's why this won't be solved as long as leftists are in charge. We need good moderate liberals and conservatives to come in and implement solutions that work in the real world, not just the world of make-believe that progressives live in.

Leftists are getting robbed to and they are changing their tune. Funny how that happens.

My DH fought hard to keep affordable housing in Columbia Heights and U St. Rallied, walked, testified, organized, wrote, visited reps. He was robbed at gun point and beaten up by the people he organized for right on U St. He doesn’t try to help keep those projects anymore.

Have pity for them. They need the coats more than you do. These poor people don’t have access to any help.

They really should have a program for that!

The Council’s Coddle Criminals Caucus has their Hug a Thug program.

You snark, but they likely do need a hug from traumatized childhoods.

They’ll probably pick your pockets and snatch your watch smh

Are you the same poster saying to hug criminals for their traumatized childhood? No one is going to advocate for affordable housing if this sh** continues.

I hope your husband is aware that he made life worse for others in the city. His time would have been better spent doing anything else.

How many others were beaten and robbed as a result of this guy's efforts? He doesn't care about them. Only himself.

Stealing and reselling is easier than legit work.

Duh.

This sort of thing didn’t really happen in our parts until the last decade. Sure, they used to steal nice sneakers and other branded items from each other. But random people in nice parts of the city? Not typically.

I didn’t wear any jewelry when I ran errands yesterday. I wore a cheap cross body under a shabby jacket. Why? Because I know people irl who have been mugged recently.

I never thought I’d need to change my behavior this way in the US. Sigh.

Agree. I know so many people who used to be what DCUM used to call "bleeding heart" - the policies bit them in the arse, and no more. What's the point?

We need to crack down and get new leadership, maybe send in the Marine and implement martial law to take out all the criminals

A staggering amount of resources have been poured into prosecuting 1/6 defendants. I'm honestly surprised even liberal news outlets like the Post have not critically questioned whether this is the best use of resources. Even, what, three years later? What if all those people were reassigned to focus on robberies and car jackings? The city would look very different in six months. But, maybe democrats think wondering through the capitol unauthorized without a weapon is better than robbing a 25-year old woman at gunpoint for her coat and threatening to kill her.
