DP. I understand what you're saying, but part of me feels like it's ridiculous to fault an organization/school/institution etc. if people don't do their own research to learn about it. It's not like some closely held secret. It's a public school. There is information about BASIS readily available on My School DC. Every year there is an education fair where parents can go to learn about the various public schools in DC. There are people who take the time to learn about options available to them and others don't. Our society is increasingly becoming one in which no one does their own homework so to speak. It then becomes someone else's fault when they don't have information. People expect to be spoon fed everything these days, which makes it difficult to discern situations where there is legitimate room to improve outreach and communications to certain demographics. |
I know you mean well, but this is an example of white folks infantilizing black people. BASIS advertises on city buses that go through historically black neighborhoods. It advertises open houses and shadow days on social media. It participates in all My School DC events. It does outreach through other underserved community resources. Your position seems to be that black folks need a white savior like you to educate them. It is well meaning...and offensive. Those parents you so kindly educated made a choice to be ignorant. Do you mean to tell me they entered the lottery and couldn't be bothered to click a link to BASIS? That's on them. It isn't on OSSE or DCPS or BASIS. |
This. Can we also take a moment to appreciate the irony that this "no one is a for accountable for their own actions/inactions" is occurring on a thread about a school that is roundly criticized for [gasps] refusing to socially promote and holding kids accountable for their successes and failures? If you were too lazy to discover BASIS when you made your list and blaming other people for your failures then you are probably not a good fit for BASIS anyway. |
You discovered basis. You lotteried and got lucky. You are no better a parent than those who were unlucky. Yet, like so many basis parents, you think your child got there through some virtue or yours/theirs. So arrogant. |
|
I have to say that the Basis parents are the most defensive people in the DC school section.
What is even wurst is that they troll threads about other schools to talk about Basis. What is up with all these insecurities? |
Typo worst |
You should learn to read. None of what you just said was in my reply. No one is claiming superiority for getting lucky in the lottery. My response was to someone who played the white savior card with respect to those poor black folks who didn't put BASIS on their list. Learn. To. Read. |
I understand why BASIS parents are defensive and protective of their school. That makes sense and speaks well for the families' attachment to the school. I think you are asking the wrong question. Why are so many of you so invested in a school you don't send your kids to, "didn't put on the lottery list" and think is overall a bad school? |
Is it even wurster than people who chime into BASIS threads (see, title of this thread) to complain about people posting about BASIS? Or was this irony? In which case, chef's kiss baby! |
Dayum. Wanna see a dead body? |
Germans are the wurst! |
Don’t be so bitte. |

Confession, you guys: I'm an ECE parent who may not even be living in DC by the time my kid is old enough for BASIS and yet threads like this are total crack for me.
I do work in K-12 education but I not sure where I stand on Basis. No direct experience with the school. Don't know why I find this all so compelling. Need a hobby or at least a new way to procrastinate at work. Send help. |
I wonder if anyone got in. |
