The Blind Side scandal

He became aware that all 4 members of the Touey family were getting royalties from the movie while he was getting nothing. When he questioned good ole dad he didn't get straight answers. He hired a lawyer to look in to this and that's when they discovered he was never adopted. The discovery took a lot of time. He has been working on this for some time.

It's interesting that they claim he blackmailed them and said he go to the press with bad stories about them if they didn't give him a bunch of money. How manipulative. He probably told them pay me a portion of the proceeds you've made off of me or I will go public. That's hardly blackmail. What horribly manipulative dishonest people. Gross.

That's exactly what blackmail is: demanding money to keep quiet about something compromising.

If the money is rightfully his, he should get the money and tell the truth publicly.

No. That’s not what blackmail is.

Requiring someone to give you money you are owed quietly or going public is not blackmail. People do that legally all the time, it’s called a settlement.

"We divided it five ways," the Tuohys wrote in their 2010 book, "In a Heartbeat: Sharing the Power of Cheerful Giving."

Um, it should have been divided in HALF. 50 to Michael and 50 to the family. Why are they getting 4/5 of the cut?!!

It’s the entire family’s story and fair that each member was compensated, but I think they should’ve divided it three ways and given a share to each child.

Without the one of them who’s still not family there would be no story.

Yes, but without the family, there wouldn't be a story either. It took all of them to make this story.

There would be nothing notable about this family deserving of a bestselling book or Oscar winning movie without Oher.

If you are savvy business people like the Tuhey's are, you may talk to Oher about capitalizing on their story. And it's not JUST Oher's story. It's all of theirs. And they all should profit. It sucks if Oher didn't get anything from the conservatorship - he should and hopefully that'll come out in the courts. But if they all profited from it, I think that's fair.

For Oher to now say that her work (marketing, traveling and doing the speaking circuit, writing her speeches, performing them, etc.) all that money should go to him is ridiculous. He should do the speaking circuit and make his own money using the story.

If Oher never went and lived with them, do you think there would even be a book? movie? speaking opportunities? No. Those all happened because of the Tuheys. Yes, it was based on him. But based on the whole family too. I read that they each got $14,000 for the movie. That's it. But for all these other opportunities I think Oher is trying for a money grab without realizing that the family made it what it is today.

Bottom line is there are a lot of us that have riveting stories that, with the right connections, startup money and/or business savvy could make some buck off of. Just having a story doesn't get you everything Oher is asking for.

So how are you paid by the Singer Media Manipulation team? How much?

They had no story without him and lied to him and all of us. How cheap not to share the royalties with him. Thanks for verifying that everything they did was about making another buck for them and getting lots of attention for themselves. What goooood people they are.

Nope. I'm making some valid points. You saying I'm part of a media team is funny.

I agree - and agreed in my first post. It's awful if they didn't share the royalties with him. they should and as I said - hopefully the truth of whether they shared and if so, how much, will come out in the courts. Hopefully.

But - I still go back to asking why should he get all the money she made by going around giving speeches? She writes them, she advertised and marketed herself to get the invites/contracts, and she performs them. I've never seen anything she's done but if they are about HER perspective and HER experience with Oher then she has every right to make money doing it.

You do realize that the Blind Side was not at all factual? Despite what the movie depicted, Oher knew about football and didn't need Leigh Anne to teach him.

It's very likely that Oher would have found success with or without the Tuohy family. He was already enrolled at the private school where the Tuohy's children went, and played football. ESPN also reported that the Tuohy family was acquainted with Oher, but became closer to him once they discovered his athletic ability.

Perhaps the question you should be asking is would anyone be paying attention to the Tuohy's if they hadn't manipulated Oher? All this proves is that the Tuohy's are famewhores and used Oher's success to further themselves and gain popularity.

Nobody said “all the money”. He deserves a fair portion of the use of his story, name, image and likeness.

She also deserves credit for all the good work she has done.

Everyone is so all or nothing these days.

Tuohy family is worth about $100 million. At one time they owned 115 Taco Bell franchises and others such as KFC.

pp here again. I look at it this way.

Let's say I am really talented and invent a widget. Some family takes me into their home and I sign a contract with them. The family takes my invention and grows it into this huge industry. I make millions on my own with my widget. But the family also makes millions on the business they built off my widget.

1. I should definitely get royalties off the widget. (So I agree Oher should get $$ for the book, movie,)
2. If family builds side businesses off how the widget became a huge industry by starting a foundation, going on speaking circuits, and doing whatever else the family comes up with - I shouldn't get that money.
3. If I want to start my own side businesses off my widget - I should do that, same as the family, and earn my own extra money with those.

I do think it's sad if this truly was just a business arrangement for the family, but maybe it wasn't. I'd like to think that they originally took him in because they cared, but then maybe saw a money making opportunity and went that way. Which is sad, but if it's the way I see it above, sounds like it was fair (if he did get his portion of the money owed.)

Not true. Oher had other people that were helping him, including a friend's father who introduced him to the principal of the private school where he played football. Oher had played football before and could have found success without the Tuohy family.

But - I still go back to asking why should he get all the money she made by going around giving speeches? Oher's not asking for all the money, just a cut of what should be his-which is not unreasonable. No one would be paying attention to Leigh Anne without Oher's name. If Leigh Anne wants to be a motivational speaker on her own merits, and not pay him, perhaps she should refrain from speaking about him. Let's face it, without Oher, the Tuohy's are just another rich white family.

Quinton Aaron who played Michael Oher. He never met Mike while he was filming. This should be a warning to Hollywood. They did this movie without even speaking to Oher because of NCAA regulations at the time.

I’m sure everyone involved wish they could undo.

I agree. Tuohys should be ashamed but they aren’t. They have made millions in speaking fees over the years and they never adopted him.

This is classic Singer spin!

Yes, I was fascinated by the VF article a PP posted. He's basically a fixer, and his thing is taking something that is semi-true and spinning it. Look at Daily Mail comments--naturally their conservative readers are buying this hook, line, and sinker.

Some on this thread, too!

We literally just watched this movie two weeks ago and they never said they adopted him at all..... I'm not saying they didn't tell him in the person that he was adopted but that was never part of their story in the movie at all.

Every single article about the movie says “adopted”.

I mean, it may be blackmail, but it's not unwarranted, and doesn't detract from the fact that they did not act appropriately as a conservator (keeping an accounting and having his best interests vs. their best interests, in making decisions). The case is not about whether he's a nice guy that you'd want to hang out with. That's neither here nor there.
