Why are we wasting our resources on these idiots?

I hate to say it, but they’re better off being crushed.

Can you explain why they can't resurface? I don't understand.

It’s more that if they haven’t yet, there is probably catastrophic failure preventing it. David Pogue has been on this vehicle and said it has 7 ways to surface, with or without power. If they haven’t AND aren’t communicating, the craft is likely gone or obliterated.

Dumb question about this. But the titanic is obviously not crushed. So once there is a hull breach wouldn't that equalize pressure and it wouldn't be crushed? I don't understand how this all works.

I used to work at Atlantis Submarines in Hawaii and they automatically resurface if there's an issue and are considered quite safe. But they aren't going down to the depths of this one, only about 100 feet down. Also the captains are trained in the Navy, not sure about this captain. Don't let this deter you, its a fun ride.

We try to rescue people. Usually because they did something dumb. Because it's the right thing to do.

Rapid de-pressurization is a violent event. And even more so at 6000 pounds of pressure per square inch.

Nobody tried to rescue those 700 migrants currently sitting on the floor of the Mediterranean Sea. I wonder why.

Read this conversation to get a better idea of what happens to the human body:

According to this article, there is one person who is thought to be on board but they aren’t sure. How does this happen? It’s a small group in there. I assume the company has a passenger list. Shouldn’t they know 100% who they sent down to the depths of the ocean? Wouldn’t there be an emergency contact or something?

Is it possible it emerged and they haven't located it yet? (ie its floating somewhere and they are trapped inside). Or would that be easy to spot?

+1000

Taxpayers should not have to pay to rescue these fools.

Guys they’re dead, you can’t bill them

Why can’t you bill their estate?

Billing people for SAR makes it less likely that the next person will be willing to call for help when necessary.

I think the pilot is the only person who hadn’t been confirmed as on board. That’s likely because of the company’s media policies or whatever. They *know* who is on board, there is no mystery there.

The boy isn’t 4. He must have asked to go.

19 year olds are notoriously great at risk assessment and their deep understanding of their own mortality.

Yeah look at the HS kid who jumped off a ship on his graduation trip in the Bahamas while drunk. Boys around this age seem to have little concept of risk/death. And he probably trusted his father knew it was safe.

Yes, that is why the US Coast Guard has C-130s flying over an area about the size of Connecticut trying to locate the submersible on the surface. Depending on the weather conditions it can be incredibly difficult to spot an object that small on the surface of the ocean without any beacon to guide rescuers. It is sadly entirely possible that they could float on the surface and suffocate before they are found, assuming they ever surfaced.

One of the rescue planes is looking at the surface for them. So yes, that is the hope - that they have surfaced and are found there.
